"How does video capture with the Sony F707/F717 compare with the Canon's?"

Beats me, I've never shot video more than once to test it. I'd have to RTFM to figure out how to do it again. For birthdays and what-not, I take both my SONY analog camcorder and DC. I can get two hours of video on one tape and have enough battery left over to view it on the 3.5" LCD several times afterward. My next camcorder will likely be Digital8.

I hate Sony Memory Stick :|
That being said, I have DSC-F707 and DSC-S75.
Battery life is more than excellent on F707, even better onf F717 according to Phil.
I've been to volleyball tourney with F707 and manage to fill 3 x 128MB in 2 hours with more than 1/3 battery life to spare and I use LCD all the time.
I've never use a spare battery yet.
A 128MB MS can store about 55-ish pictures

Noise Reduction is not use to reduce noise on ISO settings per se but mostly on low shutter speed.
I think it 1/30 sec or lower then NR kick in.
NR makes your night shot look pretty.

one of the reason why F707/F717 can focus fast and great low light performer is the lens.
f2.0 - f2.4 is a fast lens, only Oly C-5050 f1.8 is faster in 5MP DC.
You will appreciate fast lens when you shoot a lot of picture in less than ideal lighting.

Video on F717 is MPEG HQX - 320 x 240, 16 fps, no limit, including audio
(5 min 54 sec on a 128 MB Memory Stick)
As for video quality on DC, they are ok, I'm not a fans of camcorder so I think video with DC is good enough.

IMHO, Canon S50 can't compare to either F717 or G3.
The lens is too small and slow, and Canon push the imaging CCD too much on S50 that the noise is evident.

G3 OTOH is an excellent camera. Can't compare to F717 in resolution area but other than that pretty much equal or better.
Canon have much better control choices and can shoot RAW.
Color is less agressive compare to Sony's, more natural looking.
Using CF is also a huge plus

Pros on F717
Fast Lens, 5X Zoom, Long battery life, top notch resolution
cons on F717
color can be exagerated at times, sucky MS, no B&W effect, large.

Pros on G3
Use CF, all the control/settings that u can think off, more natural color, swivel LCD
Cons on G3
not 5MP ? not much cons really. Only $100 less (MSRP) than F717

Just bought a F717 two weeks ago, you can't beat it.

Razor sharp Carl Zeiss lens and ultra fast auto focus. You will lose a lot of precious moments with G3's slow focusing system. The only complaint I have is the slow read time of memory stick, other-wise this camera rocks the house.

nice but what is that halo effect around the center bird? Look closely and see the pixel distortion.

i have a Cannon G3, eventhough it's only 4MPixel, it's pretty good. The macro shot are incredible.check out my sig for my flowers pics

i also have a Nikon coolpix 5700 and a Cannon S30.

Love the G3. Eventhough the 5700 is like $1000.

so very true, my list was not a list of which to buy over another camera, i am talking about image quality straight up, then i have the right order.

Very nice, how well does the Canon G3 take macro shots of COINS?

we did a macro shot of coins test at work, no surprise the 717 beat the g3, but the g3 was next best.

the pic on my filebox is actually low quality. The full image is about 1.5 to 2.0 MB. Haven't try it yet. Going to do it soon.

I used digital zoom on the bird that's why you see little distortion, the birds are kind of far away.

Memory stick ain't no problem for me. If I use two sticks during a shoot, that's about 200 pictures! Plenty! If I go on vacation, I'll buy more sticks before I go. It takes less than 30 seconds to swap one out, so BFD.

That camera takes the sharpest images out there at that price point. Some people say that's because the "in camera" sharpening is too aggressive. From what I've also heard, you'll be hard pressed to PhotoShop sharpen your other camera images to match this. There are many comparisons' at Phil's site, as well as others.

I've had the camera for a little over three months and love it. beautiful pics, outdoor and indoor. plus great night vision shots!!

concerning the memory stick, buy.com has 256 memory sticks for about $95.00. they also have lexar 128 sticks for $28.00 after rebate.

:Q

Thanks xochi, just ordered the 128MB Lexar stick. Didn't even no there was a 256MB stick available. I'll be damned if I'd pay anywhere near that for it though!

Choosing Canon G3 or Sony F717

It would be worth checking if Sears is still price matching Internet retailers. It would be a LOT easier to return the Sony if it were purchased there, but didn't meet your needs.

it seems that people either consider the g3 & f717 to be equal, or they prefer the f717. no ardent supporters of the g3, and that was in the canon forum, too. i don't care so much about the shape/size, the memory stick thing bugs me (a LOT) but my camera choice isn't boiling down to that. if better images come from the f717, then it seems like it would be a pretty clear decision, no?

I'd personally go with the F717 myself.

But if I was really looking for a top end camera I would have to go with the Cannon 10D. Purely because its ultra fast and you can stick any lense and achieve the exact effect you want. Its more then 50% as pricey but you are entering the *Pro* arena. Does something like 9 shots in bursts or something more. No lag time at all.

I have an Minolta F100. Got a good deal on it. Really wanted the F717 though but too pricey and couldn't justify the price of it.

fyi, if you have the money to burn, sony ms pro is out in 1 GB, since the 717 takes pro you are set, only problem a GB of ms pro will cost you half the price of the camera...

Holy cow, those are some AMAZING photos... I wish I was into photography and willing to drop so much money on a digital camea. The first digital camera I ever bought was the Kodak DC265 for around $900 when it first came out. STILL USING IT. It's like a rock, but obviously not as portable, fast, and able to produce high quality photos like the newer ones. Bought a Canon S230 a few months ago for my little brother but haven't been able to use it yet (haven't seen him since school started). Hopefully when I can scrounge up enough cash I'll get the Canon S400 (was going to go for the Pentax, but figured the money spent on quality of photo is more important than the size since the S400 is small enough as it is)...

F717 for $637 from Sears
  • I used to price Match with Internet Prices at Sears. In Fact, I got 2 F707 at $529 and $575.

Now, the policy has changed. The new rules:

    • 1) Same item
      2) Brick and Mortar seller (including On-line retailers)
      3) AND has a local store within 30-40 miles!!

So, the store manager can price match: Best Buy, Circuit City, Staples, Office Max... if they have a local store

But can deny you: Ebay, Amazon, Dell as they do not have a local store withn 30 miles.

Those who are NY City are lucky then can price match 10s of grey-market venders!

    Nashua.
If you can walk away with an F717 for under $650.00... DO IT! It has no competition at that price. Real easy to return to Sears if it turns out you don't like it.

128MB Memory Stick $29.00 shipped free.
