300GB Model

400GB Model

My External 250GB Maxtor(Curse them) is on its last legs, and I need something to put that data onto. Right now, I've got two WDs, a 120GB of an 80GB, both have served me well. I'd be replacing the older 80GB with 2x300GB or 1x400GB, but I am not sure which to get. I'm leaning towards the two 300s.

The 300GB model works out to about 79 cents per GB, whereas the 400GB model comes to about 94 cents per GB.

Both have the same feature set, aside from one having an extra 100GB of space. Both also have 5 year warranties, definitely a great point. And before anyone brings it up, yes, I do need that much hdd space. :)

Two 300s are 475, as opposed to a single 400GB for 375.

Anybody else have these drives that can comment on them?

Edit - Buying two 300s from Newegg also knocks 10 USD off the price and halves the shipping cost per drive. I'm probably going to go for the 2 300s, but would like some feedback.

It all comes down to how much space you need... I'de go for the 2x300gb.. the extra 200gb might come in handy for.. err.. bragging rights.

btw, i don't like my maxtor 250gb, either.. it runs hot and makes funny noises :)

go for the 2x300, 200GB more for $100 is good

im getting 1x300GB for my next build (don't need 400GB, 300GB will do the job)

I thought about doing that too, but RAID 1 would again limit me to 300GB. Having a mirror would be nice, but I really need bulk. I can easily fill up a single 300GB drive right now. Going RAID 1 would put me right back where I started, needing more hard drive space.

Now, if I were to buy 5 300GB drives and go for a RAID 5 or 0+1 setup . . . $$$$$

A 250GB drive should be able to be RMA'd. If you don't want the drive after you copy all your data, I'll take it!

Get the 2 drives but don't RAID them. If you have a bad install and something gets screwed up, that error will be replicated on the other drive if you use RAID 1. I use one drive for all my software and the second driver for Drive Image backups of the first.

oh god you can fill up a 300 gig hdd easily? My my that is amazing!

I'd go for 1 400 gig hdd if space/cooling is a concern

I already ran the S/N on Maxtor's website, its out of warranty. :( Given my past experiences with Maxtor's RMA'd drives, that probably a good thing.

Space and cooling isn't really a concern, reliability and cost is my prime concern. Speaking by the numbers, two 300s work out to 79 cents per GB, compared to 95 cents per GB for the 400GB.

magomago, I had enough data to fill the 250 up entirely, and I had another 60GB to 70GB on my desktop's internal WD 80GB. :)
