It's about time.. Should have been done long ago.

"Twitter said the move was aimed at providing "context" around Trump's remarks. But Twitter's unprecedented decision is likely to raise further questions about its willingness to consistently apply the label to other Trump tweets that have been deemed misleading by third parties "

Oops, already posted.. :\

They need to do something! Now Trump is crying freedumb of speech......
I understand freedumb of speech, but Trump is using Twitter to campaign and lie!! If I was twitter I would say you cannot use us as a means to campaign and lie to the American public!

"President Trump responded by tweeting again, saying the social media giant "is completely stifling free speech"."

I have to agree with Trump on this one. Since pretty much everything that comes out of his mouth are lies, they are *completely* stifling his free speech.

Imagine the premier of a country being obliged to speak the truth. Oh, the humanity, woe and hardship.

Except the free speech part of the 1A is about the government limiting speech, not private entities.

Twitter can do whatever the hell it wants. It's not the government.

Well, when it's obvious to anyone who knows anything that he's making things up while on one of his tirades it's time to drop in a fact check, goddammit.

That’s right. Apparently a private entity fact checking the liar in chief is a huge violation of 1A rights.

You can’t make this stuff up. Though not unexpected from the baby in the WH.

isn't trump the one violating free speech by threatening (as a gov't entity) twitter ?

He'll violate free speech if he dictates Twitter's content. Threatening it, though? Not unless he goads people to harass Twitter and its staff... though sadly, I wouldn't be surprised if he does.

After Twitter Fact-Checks Donald Trump's Tweet, President Threatens to Close Down Social Media Platforms

President Donald Trump has threatened to "strongly regulate" or close down social media platforms if they curb the speech of conservative users.

The commander-in-chief said on Wednesday morning that his administration would consider the measures if the tech platforms were to "totally silence conservative voices."

He also urged social media firms to "clean up" their acts a day after Twitter labeled two of his tweets as "potentially misleading."

Posting on social media, Trump said: "Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen.

"We saw what they attempted to do, and failed, in 2016. We can't let a more sophisticated version of that happen again."

After claiming that voting by mail would lead to a "free for all on cheating" and electoral fraud, the president added: "Whoever cheated the most would win. Likewise, Social Media. Clean up your act, NOW!!!!"

Newsweek has contacted the White House and Twitter for further comment. This article will be updated with any response.

Trump issued his warning to social media companies after Twitter fact-checkedposts he made claiming that mail-in voting increased instances of fraud.

The social media platform tagged the president's two tweets with a message that linked to a page with statements refuting a connection between mail-in voting and increased voter fraud.

He threatens a lot of things... he absolutely doesn't have the authority to shut them down merely for fact-checking him, and he can't really regulate them for posting facts.

People have been banned from this very forum for saying less inflammatory things than Trump has on Twitter yet he feels as if he is somehow above all these silly restrictions. Why people continue to support a man who thinks he is better than them and beyond normal rules and laws is beyond my comprehension. Wake up.

Precisely. If he had an ounce of integrity he wouldn't care if they drop in a fact check. He'd shrug it off. But that's not him.

And yes, the obvious honest reaction (and the one I had immediately) was that it is he who's violating the spirit of free speech by fuming at them providing a fact check.

Bingo. What's really happening here is that Trump is using his govt powers as President to threaten the free speech rights of private citizens. Meanwhile, contrary to Trump's claims, Twitter has done nothing to infringe his free speech, he's upset because they inserted their own speech in a couple of his tweets and that triggered him.

The lashing out is just more senseless than usual. Gets the old right wing persecution complex all revved up, too.

The deeper issue is Trump's attempt to discredit the electoral process, the foundation of democracy. It's been the prelude to many an authoritarian power grab. It can only happen when the people lose faith in the process. It's a different kind of thing than slandering Scarborough. Hell- He's claiming that elections in CO, OR & WA are illegitimate because we use mail in ballots. It's a damnable lie. Twitter certainly has the right, even the obligation, to call him on it.

Back in 2016, social media was the wild west of troll armies & bots deployed by a variety of pro-Trump forces. They exploited the platforms in a dishonest way the companies never intended so they've developed counter measures. Trump hates that, of course.
