Twitter, Facebook, Last.fm not for the kiddies on Xbox Live

Major Nelson posted earlier that Twitter, Facebook, and Last.fm will be off-limits to individuals that are under 18. However, they are working on an update that will give access to kids 13 - 17 with their parents approval (assuming through parental controls).

Obviously, MS is playing it careful here to protect themselves despite the fact that these three applications are easily accessible via any household computer or smart phone.

Err, doesn't last.fm just stream music? What would be the harm in allowing that?

It's uncensored I believe. So any song that would have a parental advisory label on the album would be breaking the law if kids were allowed to listen. It's easier to just make the whole thing off limits to kids rather than just figure out a way to limit only certain songs.

I was going to say "it's not as if the kids can't just watch MTV to hear the bad lyrics", then I remembered that MTV doesn't have music videos anymore. 😛

It is stupid to censor those things though as it's not like they're not easily available elsewhere. If you have an 360, there's probably an internet connected computer in the house too.

Right, but they're just dodging the legal liabilities. I don't like it either, but it makes sense. Whenever you register an account for last.fm or pandora on the PC, part of the agreement IIRC is agreeing you're of age to hear explicit songs.
