twinmos/twinmos twinmos/winbond

So if you had the choice between these two, which would you pick?

for those that don't know, the winbond 5 ns chips are the same ones that corsair xms series uses

now knowing this, let's say someone wants to buy a 512 meg stick:

1. twinmos/twinmos 2 x 256 megs pc3200: $116 (twinmos / twinmos uses winbond but it's rebadged as twinmos so it's cheaper)

2. twinmos/winbond 512 megs pc3200: $134 - people are being able to run this at 2-2-2-6(even 5) @ 200 mhz

all these are CL2.5 but i know for a fact that 1 and 2 can run @ cas 2

so given this fact which one would you buy?

I'd take the rebadged Winbond chips. Only $59 per a 256mB stick. What you could also get is some Hyper-X PC3000 which is known to hit DDR400 speeds also, $49 per 256mb stick, and $75 for PC3500 variety. (excaliberpc.com)

i have the pc3000 hyperx by kingston...

my system doesn't like it at 200 mhz ... i've relaxed timing to 2.5-3-3-7 and it still didn't like it... 🙁

i have it running at 184 @ 2-2-2-6 (better than the 2.5-3-3-7 it's rated for)....

i was hoping to get one of these....

i want a 512 megs though... and i hear that 1 stick has a better chance of o/c-ing then two...

but 116 for 512 megs is a darn good deal... especially if it COULD do 2-2-2-6 @ 200 mhz

Shimmishim, since you are now on a quest for bandwidth over speed, I'm thinking you are a candidate for the 8RDA+ vdd mod (you do have the 8RDA+ right?). It seems that a lot of people couldn't get over 200fsb without doing that mod. Memory wasn't what was holding them back. Or, you could wait a little longer and get the rumored new 8RDA+ version that has vdd bios adjustment. Not having to mod the mobo does have a certain appeal, I'd say. I would guess that you will then have better luck in your quest for 220mhz fsb!!

Single stick will certainly oc better than 2 sticks, but you're running a nForce2 board, right? Isn't the dual channel supposed to give you more bandwidth while running 2 sticks?

yes... but the gain is minimal.. like 3 to 5%

i hear that dual channel is best for the boards with the intergrated graphics ....

w/o IC... it's very very minimal... might as well just go with one stick 😀

Go 2 sticks. Twinmos w/ Winbond is better. However, ExcaliberPC has HyperX PC3500 for $75 per 256mb stick, great deal, IMO, that's what I would go with.
