Unfortunately I haven't backed up the registry either, so you guys are my only hope. Ever since using TweakUI in Windows 2000 Professional to remove the shortcut arrow from my icon, all of my icons have been displaying in 4-bit, 256 color mode.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling my video card drivers, disabling and re-enabling the "Show icons using all possible colors" option in Display Properties, even found and deleted the "ShellIconCache" file in /WINNT/ and rebooted in case that had been corrupted. Struck out on each count. :(

Can anyone help me out - know a registry fix or how to resolve this problem? I've checked old messages here and nobody seems to have resolved the issue, though a few have experienced it. Any of those people solve it after all?

Thanks in advance guys.

Repair Icons in TweakUI wasn't working, neither was the resolution from the MSDN database from kranky's links - though searching Deja did finally net me a solution; I'll post it here for others' benefit.

Annoying icon color problem! @ groups.google.com

My exact steps:
1. Close down all other windows.
2. Unclick/disable "Show icons using all possible colors" in Display Properties.
3. Run NetMeeting.
4. Close NetMeeting normally.
5. Restart Win2K Pro.
6. When back at the desktop, go back into Display Properties and enable "Show icons using all possible colors". Problem solved.

Thanks again to everyone who replied. :)

Here's the basic Windows recovery routine..

Boot to DOS

Type c:\del *.*

Boot to dos w/CD support

Insert Windows CD

Type install

Sorry...couldn't resist.
