Maybe it's the SiS 603 that's really slow, but does anyone know how to tweak, the xserver settings?

Right now, I've disabled the settings that display the contents of the windows as the move them or resize them, but it's still pretty choppy.

My main concern isn't a graphical workstation, but some speed in moving my windows around would be nice.

The X windowing system is slow and bulky. The only thing that saves it is that there are no alternatives as developed and useable as X. Did the Xfree86 site have any hints for your graphics card? Can you add more RAM? Can you get a newer (Matrox G200 range) video card? Do you need X?

unfortunately, I can't upgrade... this is one of those all-in-one book pcs that wont allow an upgrade.

i don't have to use X and eventually (once i am comfortable and familiar with unix) i'll have no need for X, since this system is going to be used as a server.

is there any quicker desktop environment? i'm using kde right now... and i tried gnome in past, but it didn't seem too much faster.

I have 16mb of shared ram that i'm using for my video.

would changing the color depth from 24bits to 16 bits help?

YEah, lowering the color bits will help a lot. I am amazed KDE and especially gnome run at all. Try blackbox. I use it all the time. It is pretty and VERY non-memory intesive (although I have plenty of memory). If you are looking for that windows feel try icewm.
