for those that have a Sony Wega => 27 I would recommend performing these tweaks. This link ponits out how to fix the red saturation in the PQ.

Wega Tweak.

I mostly used the service menu to fix the red problem and boy did it make a difference. These settings are pretty close to what I have +/- a notch. So I would recomend trying this for better DVD PQ.

some questions for wega owners....

will a progressive scan dvd look better on the 27" wega even though it's not a digital tv? i'm pretty sure it will, but wanted to ask. Also do some progressive dvd players output better picture quality??

also, do you guys have a funny power buttons on the unit? Sometimes I press it and it turns off and on like I pushed it twice.

I tried the tweaks on my 32" wega, it seemed to have helped a bit, not a hugh difference. It appears quite a bit darker then what I had originally, but I have gotten use to it.

progressive scan can be seen on most TV's, just make sure you use a good quality interconnect (component video)
just try it.. set your DVD player to regular interlaced, and then progressive... mine switches as soon as you change it right on the menu, and you can see the difference right then and there. it'snot digital either, it's a HDTV rear projection hooked up through component video.

Actually, the TV is a "vega" and not a "Wega." The "W" symbol is actually two Vs together. ;)

However, thanks for posting the link. I'll get around to doing some adjustments on my 32".

I dont recomend that you do this. The service menue settings are different from set to set. Go buy or rent Avia for Home Theater DVD and use the service menue to set up geometry and overscan. Make your contrast, sharpness, color and hue corrections from the user menue. I once calibrated my 32" Wega grayscale using a Sony F500 monitor and Photoshop 6 gamma control and just eyballed it. I had it checked later on by a ISF tech and it was pretty close to 6500K.

and i still don't get the 16:9 compression thing. What's the big deal about? Someone tried to give me a 1 page documentary about it before....can someone explain it to me without too much technical mumbo-jumbo? I just want to know how to take advantage of it.

1 Set your DVD player for 16.9 ouput in the DVD setup menue. 2 Look at the DVD specs and look for Anamorphic Widescreen or enhanced for Widescreen. 3 activate the 16.9 mode in the Wega user menue if #2 applies to the DVD title. The 16.9 compression adds 34% more resolution because it only needs to draw the interlacing scan lines within the letterboxing. If you output a widescreen picture to a 4.3 set without 16.9 compression, you lose that 34% of resolution because scan lines will also have to be drawed into the letterboxing. Got It ?
