Ok so I rebooted my computer for some reason and now the BIOS wont detect the SSD , only the 3 sata hard drives. I tried diff power and sata cable same thing. Tried on my dads Sandy comp and no detection BIOS just gets stuck. Before I woke up my dad called Crucial support. They said we only RMA dead mechanical drives. SSDs do not die. They e-mailed a fix for whats called the power cycle.

Hello Saro, Thank you for contacting Crucial. In most cases when your SSD cannot be reconized by any BIOS, your SSD can be returned to normal operating condition by completing a power cycle. The process will take approximately one hour. "took 20 min." We recommend you perform this procedure on a desktop computer because it allows you to only connect the SATA power connection, which improves the odds of the power cycle being successful. However, a USB enclosure with an external power source will also work. Apple and Windows desktop users follow the same steps.

1. Once you have the drive connected and sitting idle, simply power on the computer and wait for 20 minutes. We recommend that you don't use the computer during this process.

2. Power the computer down and disconnect the drive for 30 seconds.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 at least one more time.

4. Reconnect the drive normally, and boot the computer to your operating system.

5. If the latest firmware has not been updated to your drive, do so. Go to http://www.crucial.com/support/firmw...l.com/contact/ It worked.

Did the cycle once and SSD is back in BIOS. all works perfect. Thank you Crucial. BTW Im on latest firmware from 2 days ago. How can fast get faster lol.

OK - what happens to the data that was on the SSD? This is the first time I've ever heard of the "power cycle." Wierd!

BTW - suggest you delete your duplicate post. You can do that. :)

You don't lose any data.

It shouldn't matter if you use the computer or not during the process, if the data cable isn't connected. Unless, of course, the SSD in question is your boot drive.

What a faff. Not sure how this bug has escaped common knowledge.

Samsung are the only SSD vendor for me these days.

That problem is due to the new firmware upgrade, many users needed to do the power cycle to get their ssds functioning again.

Was there even any reason to update the firmware, or did you just do it because you could?

Staying on top of Windows updates and Adobe's updates for example is all one thing, but you shouldn't have to stay on top of firmware updates like that. I would personally never update the firmware on anything unless it was absolutely necessary.

did you power it on with the data cable connected or disconnected?

I wonder if that trick could bring back my bricked Mushkin Chronos Deluxe?

Edit: Tried it twice, 15 minutes at a time, no luck.

While computer inside OS but didn't touch comp for 20 minutes as it says. crazy stuff, Soo SSDs can't die .. that is what Crucial said. It is true that most SSDs don't die, but very few will come back to life with just a power cycle.

Indilinx will come back to life with a forced flash, but this wipes the drive clean.
SandForce based SSDs panic lock, and have to be returned to the manufacturer to be revived, again all date is wiped.
Marvell based SSDs can be brought back to life by a power cycle, but if it was me, I'd back up all data then secure erase the SSD to launder all the NAND, and make sure any corruption to the FTL is fixed with the secure erase.

Intel controller based SSDs tend to stay bricked and require returning to the manufacturer, although some can be recovered with a force flash.

Samsung, never seen one bricked so no idea about those.
LAMD, same applies.

When it came back it booted directly into Windows. I didn't lose any data, and was never told by Crucial I would lose my stuff. Things work like a charm,

Im just scared it might happen again hopefully not. Cuz I dont think I can downgrade firmware ,, hmmmmmm

The FTL (flash translation layer) info is stored in a table hidden from the OS, it maps LBA's to flash blocks. There is no way you can tell if this table has been corrupted or not (it probably hasn't), but just watch out for data corruption in the future.

It's better to be safe now and backup any important data on the SSD, than be sorry later. :)

Turns out this happens to peeps comps that have busted mobo like mine used p5k, if you change a bios setting besides FSB the comp doesn't boot and messes up the SSD on the new firmware. The old firmware did not do this. So I messed with the BIOS like a idiot and it happened again, BIOS couldnt find ssd. I did the same thing what Crucial said. I did it and 20 min later Im back up and running in Winblows. So as long as I don't go in the BIOS this will not happen again. I trust SSD more then mechanical since they dont die, but mechanical can stop spinning.. anyhow........

So basically if you weren't incessantly messing with settings, firmware updates, etc things would have never gone wrong and been fine all along?

Yes, if I didnt touch things which I shouldnt have since I got the FSB to 399 and everything is on auto in the OC section except fsb , only way you can OC this crapola mobo whos firewire and esata dont work either...
