TWAIN driver errors

I just got myself a Canon Powershot A410.. downloaded and installed the TWAIN6.6 driver from Canon's site... every image acquisition program I run (Kodak Imagevue, ACDSee, Paint Shop Pro) crashes.... I uninstalled the drivers, then scanned my system and found that there were other twain drivers etc from years ago.... removed each one... then reinstalled the latest from Canon.... still the same grief.

I cannot get the damned TWAIN drivers to work on my Win 2000 (SP5) system... anyone have any idea where I should start to fix this?
