...what are you going to plug them *into*, exactly?

I guess you could have something that could browse SMB or NFS shares on a LAN and let you play files... however, this is not simple nor cheap, and space-wise it would be hard to put into a flatscreen TV. Anything much more sophisticated than that requires custom protocols at this point.

At the moment, it makes more sense for this kind of thing to be in an STB.
