TV Won't Turn on after programming remote?

So, I was helping a friend program their cable box remote so that it will control their TV power and sound. For about the past 2 years, the tv had only been turned on using the button on the front.

So I followed the instructions, (hold OK+Mute) and then entered the 3-digit panasonic code. The TV turned off as it is supposed to, but now it won't turn back on. I've tried the remote and the buttons on the front of the tv.

Any thoughts? If a remote is not used for a while and then one is used, can that cause damage? (this is an old, 32" tube tv.)

The only way the remote could do something like that is if the remote put the tv into service mode, really rare and the tv display would change, not turn off. More likely is the tv picked this point to stop working and its a coincidence.

You could have a stuck micro, some of the older sets were really prone to this and would need a reset. Unplug the tv and wait for a few minutes, and try it again. If that fails, unplug and leave for about 8 hours , some sets used supercaps to store settings and those take longer to drain. If after that it still doesn't work then the tv has something electrical wrong. The only difference in turning on a tv from the remote and the button on the front is what initiates the request. Remote it is a sensor telling a micro to turn on, button it is a switch telling the micro to turn it on. Both require the micro to do the actual power switching.

thanks!

ended up being a blown fuse and must have just been timed while programming the remote. I was able to open the case, find the fuse and replace it, but at the cost of the power button on the front of the tv being permanently stuck. oh well!
