TV warranty

My sister bought a Phillips in Aug '02. Recently, she turned it on and it started smoking and fizzing. Even though she didn't turn in the warranty card, is it still under warranty? She talked to them earlier and they want $160 to fix it! Any thoughts?

TIA

i never mailed any warrantee stuff in and i was able to get my tv fixed at a local tv repair place, of course i got creditted back the money from the manufacturere

Best buy. But they wanted her to pay for the repair. She shouldn't have to pay anything I'm assuming.

If she got the best buy extended warrenty, I believe they'll just let you exchange it for a new one. Sounds like possible electrical arching inside, hence the smoke.

Yeah no extended. I'm just upset that they want to charge her $160 for something that's under warranty. They SHOULD fix it for free I'm thinking.

But it isn't up to BB to fix it. The only deal with it if its their warranty. If you want the manufacturer to fix it, you have to get it to them.

You'll probably get screwed on the phillips/mag warranty, unless you purchased an extended warranty with the retailer. You'll need to find a phillips/mag authorized warranty servicer and get an estimate, then you'll be re-imbursed for the repair (hopefully).

In many cases the factory warranty ONLY covers parts NOT labor, at the shop i work for most invoices average about 30% parts 70% labor. good for phillips/mag, bad for you 😱

Technically you have to turn in those warranty cards to get warranty service, many places will let this slide however phillips is one of the worst TV brands out there service/support wise. G/L

EDIT: did i mention phillips products come very poorly reccomended by me 🙂

Those warranty cards are nothing but customer info / demographics info collectors. They are not necessary to have warranty service. The sales receipt is the only document you need to show. What are you going to have to ask permission , have them check a database and approve before work is done? NO! You only need to verify proof of purchase date, in most cases.
<Deals with Music Equipment / Pro Audio warranty issues. Dealt with Sansui in the Good Old Days (college years) with warranty repair of stereo equipment.

Ummm, its the manufacturers warranty not the store retaliers warranty. It's not up to Best Buy to fix it or even ship it. Thats all up to the TV manufacturer.
