TV Tuner card to suit my needs

So me and the girlfriend miss Tivo and now that we have and HD TV and servicer, we really want a new HD Tivo.

So for $200 we can get a refurb HD tivo off of their website, but I was wondering if there was a comperable setup for the PC that would work?

If anything a HD Tv Tuner that would work with out comcast provider and windows media center (or something comperable) we would be set.

In closing it comes down to, $200 HD Tivo, or similar priced computer setup that works with comcast.

Thanks

Unfortunately you'll be hard-pressed to find a "similar priced computer setup" that will work with Comcast. Sure most TV tuner cards will work with their basic TV package, but if you want to watch the premium channels (HBO, Starz, Cinemax, etc), you're out of luck. You'll need a DVR that will allow you to watch Comcast's premium channels.

Now that I think of it, didn't Comcast provide you with a DVR? Usually the monthly "fee" that they attach to the DVR, is very small. and you should be able to view any of their HD channels (provided you pay for the appropriate service).

agree with somethingsketchy, your best bet is probably to use the comcast dvr. It will suck bigtime compared to tivo's user interface but it's the most cost effective.

If you have an existing computer, you can get the Hauppaugge HD-PVR. I think it costs about $150-200. It takes component input, converts on-the-fly to h.264 (you control the quality) and connects to your computer by USB. It has an IR-blaster so it will change the channel on the cable box for you.

It has some software that comes with it, but I don't know how good it is. Don't know about compatiblity with Windows MCE. It does work with Mediaportal which is opensource, free, "MCE-like" software. MythTV probably supports it as well. Then you have paid software like BeyondTV and SageTV. Those will all give you tivo-like features.
