TV Tuner card question.

I need to get a TV Tuner card for college, because I want to conserve room so I'll double my monitor as a TV. On Newegg the Aver TV Tuner goes for $40 but it's out of stock. MWave.com has it for $66 which is way too much considering I can get it for $40. Any other site has it for cheap? ANd is it worht it? Are there better TV Tuner cards out there? (No i'm not going to buy an all in wonder. I want a stand alone tv tuner card). Thanks.

I know all bt878 & bt848 based cards are supported by Dscaler. Which is probably the viewer you'll want to use. Their performance is relatively similar, just make sure it has the inputs you want. If you're going to be using a vcr or tivo(something that already has a tuner) then you can just get a video-in card for much cheaper.

AverTV Tuner is pretty good, I bought the stereo version from frys for $50. I like it because of the TV in and stuff. Good stuff but there might be better ones out there...

Hauppuage is definitely the best in TV tuners.

They have stable drivers and the card hardly hogs any PC resources.

If your looking for a good tv tuner, I recommend the WinTV line of Hauppuage

is it better to have stereo sound or mono sound? btw, i would be running the tv while doin other things..

Stereo is always better, but personally I don't care for regular TV viewing. Really its just a preference thing, and wether you're willing to spend the extra $$ for stereo. 😉

🙂 I got a Pinnacle PCTV card... pretty good reception and works with other video capture/editing software like winCoder/Producer (I think that's what it's called)... pretty neat gadget... oh and the software lets you record from VCD quality all the way to DVD quality... allows timeshift recoreding (TIVO-like property) and direct burn to CD for your captured videos... It's the cheapest Pinnacle card (theres one called PCTV Pro that comes with an FM tuner... might be nice to add radio function too to reduce clutter in your dorm room)... well... these are my two cents... good luck in your decision and I hope this helps... oh.. and below is a link that also might help... I used it to make my decision...

BTW... this card also came with software that converts video to and from MPEG-1/ MPEG-2/ AVI-whatnot and some others... 😎
and not to mention a nice remote too...
