Hey all, my 55" Samsung LED took a crap on me and best buy gave me a 1300 gift card to buy something new. This tv will be in my living room, main tv. I've been out of the TV game for a bit so I'm not sure what's out there. I'm willing to pay a little on top of the 1300 but nothing crazy (still need tax + new warranty)

I want atleast 55", would like to go to 60 and up though.

What does AT recommend these days? What's the latest and greatest with TVs?

Plasma? LED? LCD?

Thanks!

If you are able to control the lighting in that room (glare, reflections, windows) then get a 60"+ Panasonic Plasma.

60" Panasonic ST50, or get the 55" if you want to stay the same size. This is by far the best TV in the $1-5k price range.

While Panasonic just released the ST60, I would stay away until more people have reviewed them. The added bonus is that the ST50's are seeing some price drops as a result.

I hate when they try to sell LED Backlit TV's as if they were LED TVs. That's very deceptive marketing.

That kind of money will get you a projector and a screen if you happen to be in a completely light controlled dedicated home theater room.

Otherwise, if you are in a home theater room with semi-controlled lighting, go with the plasma as the others are saying :)

If you are in like a living room or something and it's going to be on During the day or with lots of lights on, then pick another LCD. It doesn't make any difference if it's LED backlit or not as far as picture quality goes. The only thing LED backlit makes a difference for is some savings on your monthly electric bill.

I think people are just being lazy in their marketing, and they want to avoid saying "LED LCD". However, they still needed something to easily differentiate between the CFL-lit LCD TVs and the LED-lit LCD TVs. Although, the latter only gets more confusing for consumers when you add in edge-lit and direct-lit.

I totally forgot that I posted this!! Ooops!! Anyway, I got the gift card from the warranty...I've used BBY warranty countless amounts of times and it's always great...1300 for a 2+ year old TV? Hell yeah! I ended up finding a Sharp 60" LED open box for 699...I know it's not the greatest in terms of quality but I was able to buy TV and 5 year warranty and still have 300 left on the card! Thanks guys!

Agreed. I ended up returning a Sony LCD TV that I wasn't satisfied with for a Panasonic plasma, and it was definitely worth the hassle.

OK so the Sharp 60" might be going back...Terrible picture quality, ghosting, and a red-ish tint backlight bleed in some spots...It was cheap though, but I cant stand the ghosting!

I'd also spend the money for a 60" or 65" Panasonic plasma. I'd not buy the warranty though. Usually minor things that go wrong with big tv's can be fixed if you're handy.

Ok so I took back the sharp today and the manager really wanted me to keep it so he have me another 200 off!!! That makes the tv 499!! I decided ill keep it at that price and put it in the bedroom (the bedroom in my townhouse is freakishly large so it's ok). I looked around the store for a TV and after some bargaining with the manager I walked out with the Vizio E701I-A3 70" LED! The manager gave it to me for 1300 which is fantastic as its on sale for about 1600 on most sites. The TV looked great in store! I didn't think Vizio made a respectable tv. I was always under the impression that they were a generic Costco brand.
