Some of my roommates and I are going to get a new TV together. None of us know enough about TV's to really begin looking, so I come here in hopes of knowledge.

The requirements:
1080P (HD, 360--is it necessary?)
HDMI
48" +
< $1000

We plan on playing a lot of video games, and I'm sure it will be on a lot... probably at least 10 hours a day.

A few things I'm aware of:
I have heard that replacing the bulbs for a DLP TV can cost a ton--how true is this, and how often does it happen?
I have heard the Plasma/LCD argument about power consumption. Is this argument valid, and how much more power does LCD use (in terms of $$$).

Any advice/direction would be great. Thanks.

I think if you're willing to go Westinghouse with no integrated tuner, you can manage 46" 1080p and $999 and still get a nice quality panel (LCD wise).

DLPs are far cheaper at least in the 720p variety and I can't speak much to plasmas.

Anyone else correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm fine with DLP... other than that replacement issue. Whats the story there?

I just purchased a Samsung 56" LED DLP from amazon for $1968 (almost 600 cheaper than BB or CC) free white glove delivery which was perfect. they called me when it got to a local warehouse and set up a time to deliver unboxed it and everything was perfect. I kept the box just in case "shit happened" which is running perfect 3 weeks strong. The tv is amazing I have direct tv with hd package and a 360. both look great for some reason to my eyes the 360 has a lot more detail than it did on my sammy 36" crt hd. I wanted the 1080p and hdmi cause I watch a lot of movies and plan on getting blue/hd when i get the money. Another note its in an apartment and i'm sitting about 10 feet away and its great. and i feel the dlp has a larger viewing angle than lcd or plasma which is good for more people watching it.

LED bulb life 20,000 hours vs. 3,000 to 6,000 hours for a typical DLP bulb

20,000 is definitely long enough for me.

There are no LED DLP's anywhere near your price range.

Flat panel plasma/LCD - No
Really careful shopping for a DLP or LCD projection - Yes

I know it's a long way away, but IMHO for big ticket items when you're at the border of being able to afford it, Black Friday can really be a lifesaver. You can have the TV for as long time, so if waiting 4 months allows a 46" instead of a 37" I would consider it.

I have been very happy with my LCD Projection TV. I haven't looked at a ton of DLP's, but my friend has one and I don't think the picture is nearly as sharp.

Also, if you were willing to "settle" for 720p you could probably have a lot more choices in your price range.

Dang, it went back up. It was $1330 or so yesterday. I managed to snag one last month for $1380 + $122 (tax) - $175 (gift certificate) = $1327 shipped.

Yeah your price was pretty sweet!

OP, if you can live with 720P (you sit farther than ~10ft and dont use it as computer monitor) you probably can get a DLP for that price, although the bulbs last about 2-3 years.
