THE PRISONER (a remake of the classic BBC series which will debut November 2009) at the Television Critic?s press tour today, and producer Trevor Hopkins says original series creator and star Patrick McGoohan was originally approached to make an appearance, but the timing didn?t work out.
?We asked McGoohan to play a cameo,? says Hopkins. ?He loved it and loved the casting, but he wasn?t able to travel and take part of it.?
Jim Caviezel stars in this new version of THE PRISONER as ?Six? who ends up in a place called ?The Village? which is a perfect utopia with no memory of how he got there. Of course, he realizes he?s trapped and wants to find out why he?s there and how he can escape. Ian McKellen plays his foil, "Two," who controls many of the Village?s strings.
In terms of the long-gestating film version of THE PRISONER, Hopkins says that this mini-series shouldn?t interfere with it.
?My understanding, although we made the TV series, the movie is still in development,? says Hopkins. ?It will happen, but these are two are quite separate projects.?
As for fans, Hopkins says they will get a kick out of the new version of THE PRISONER and says they ?re-envisioned? (yeah, that old word) the original as opposed to completely remaking it.
?We?re all huge fans of the original, but we realized we couldn?t copy it,? says Hopkins.
And even though the series will answer questions and have a resolution by the end of the mini-series (unlike the original 17-episode BBC series), Hopkins doesn?t rule out more from them if it?s successful for AMC.
?There?s a conclusion at the end of the sixth episode, but whether there would be more from AMC, I don?t know,? says Hopkins. ?There are choices in that conclusion. Yes, it could continue.?
