TV show "reviews" on Youtube - WTF?

I'm noticing a phenomenon on Youtube of TV episode 'reviews' for a show like Game of Thrones that are nearly as long as the episode itself.

For example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9ACp4MsCZ4 (25 minutes)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ua2A66CxRM (43 minutes)

Are people actually watching this shit? Do we really need some random Youtuber's impressions of an episode that we just watched ourselves? This is madness. This. Is. Sparta!!!

Youtube is the scourge of intelligent people. Can't list how many times I've gone to a link to read something and find out the small blurb to get you there was all the written material with the rest being a dammed YT link cause some schmuck thinks he's going to ride the YT cash money wave.

I think it's partly click-bait... some of them pretend to be uploads of the actual episode. People click on it, stay long enough to log a view, and leave.

It's the same for live performances, award show clips, etc.

I wonder if part of the length has to do with YouTube Red. With Red, part of the money that you pay for the subscription goes directly to the creators of the videos that you watched. This is paid based upon how long you spent watching their videos, which means that longer videos can make you far more money.

I've looked at an unboxing because I wanted to see the contents of the box. Sometimes it's because I'm selling an item on eBay, and I want to be sure that I know what should be sold with it. Also, sometimes an unboxing is really more of a first impression video, which isn't as good as a full review, but it's not bad.

Unboxing videos do actually have a legitimate purpose for purchasing decisions in some cases. Sometimes, you need to know how long it takes to set something up, maybe get a rough size without having to dig through dimensions, find out if something is included that may not be mentioned on a product page, etc. A lot of unboxes also combine a product review, which can be useful, too.

I think I've only watched one or two unboxing videos, and I used them for the above reasons.

It's one part like looking at a catalog when you were a kid, one part inventory check, one part to see what you actually get versus the fluffed/polished PR official photos, and there's usually some commentary.

Long story short, there's a demand for this kind of stuff and money to be made.

It depends on who is talking about the show. I watch/listen to Grantland's Game of Thrones podcast, which is now After the Thrones on HBO Now. I find it useful because I have a hard time remembering the fantasy names and places, so they remind me who or what was referenced in the episode. Like the King of the Iron Isles's brother. I got he was his brother, but I didnt recognize the name or the actor and couldn't remember if he was already mentioned in the show. After the Thrones confirmed it and provided some context.

YouTube....where people become millionaires by filming themselves reacting to something. Meanwhile, people trying to cure cancer are fighting for a buck.

The world is a messed up place.

They should film themselves fighting cancer, clearly.

I'ved used it when buying used items and want to know what to expect and confirm will be included.
