I'm looking to a TV. The main requirement is to stay under $1000. The softer requirement is that the TV stays under 47" wide. This usually means a 46" TV, though some 50" TVs with thinner frames work.

What would you guys recommend? I've been looking at the Samsung LCDs. I definitely want at least 120hz. My viewing distance is about 8-10 ft. Would a 50" or bigger be better? I have a recess in the wall 47" wide, but if I really have to I can move it forward, though I'd prefer not to.

I don't think any of the samsungs 50" plasmas are under 47 inches, they appear to be just about 1/2" wider. That being said, pretty much any of the 46" LCDs that samsung makes(LN46C650 and below) can be had for under $1000. Although right now the 650 is $1050 at amazon, but I have seen it for less than 1000 at amazon, you just gotta get it at the right time. Any other features you would want besides 120hz?

I suggest Sony or Sharp. Samsung quality is economy which it shows. From reviews Sharp Aquos LC-46LE700UN is better than Samsung and it is cheap for its performance.

Going thin or sticking with edge lit LCD TV and putting in a recessed wall will not give you the ability to show it off. If you are thinking of wall mounting in the recessed wall, thin is the bad way to go. Mounting on the wall in the recessed wall gives more access to do connections.

Using any recess wall to put the TV will have problems with heat, so a 46 inch TV is the biggest you can go.

The minimum TV size for viewing at 8 to 10 feet away is 50 inches. At this distance it is best to go with 55 or 60 inches. A 70 inch will be the best at that viewing distance.

For your recessed wall, stay away from plasmas because they give out a lot of heat. DLP Tv also may not be good because they too give out a lot of heat.
