My brothers and I are looking to get a tv for my parents for Christmas. There is a maximum width in the space available of 38", so I think that puts it in the 32"-40" tv range, though 40" look to be a bit too wide.

What would be good for at or under $400? (we're willing to go a little more if there is something substantially better for only a little more)

-I have no preference for LED or LCD here
-Same goes for refresh rate
-720p or 1080p is also fine (general viewing will be from about 8 feet)
-No need for a lot of HDMI ports (2 is fine)

Led is LCD so your comment about preference is amusing. In that size any display will be fine. I would personally look for a Sony brand and see what is available in your budget

Yeah, I knew that LED is an LCD type... just how stores break down their choices for backlight.

We went with an LG 37CS560 (37", 1080p, CCFL-backlit). Fit the budget and size requirements we had.

Congrats, how much did you pay?

37" is an unusual size, glad you found something that you like.

It was $390.

It is an unusual size. With only about 38" of width room though, a 40" (also not a very common size) would be pushing it in most cases.
