Whats a good/decent wide & flat screen tv.. not flat panel.. Any recommendation ? looking for around 32-36"

I'd stay away from a direct-view TV - too small, especially for widescreen material (HD, DVD)

How about one of the samsung 41" TVs?

hey what does wega mean anyway ? this was the one I found.. not sure if there are cheaper ones..

Sony KV34HS510

its hard to see if the tv are widescreen off the website also..

What is your budget? What are your viewing habits/plans (HDTV, DVD, gaming, 4:3 material)?

It's good not to have a budget but a screaming mom.. this is for my parents, and they're using a 27" sony right now.. which is pretty good, about 6 years old, not flat tube.

They just watch general tv and since they're getting older, they need bigger tv to see better.. haha, easier to read words on tv. I bearly watch tv myself so..

BTW anyone know the difference between the sony regular and sony XBR ?

My sister found prices like 30% off retail at China town - may be black market

screaming mom is the factor.... im looking 34-36". They dont want something that'll take up the whole room. It's still bigger than the 27" right ?

either that or just a 36" 4:3 one instead of 16:9

again,

Why such a small TV?

16x9 content on that tv will be miserable.

I have a sony 34xbr800 34 inch widescreen, and although it wouldn't be ideal for a huge living room, it is perfect for mine. (I am biased, though. I greatly dislike the picture quality of most projection tv's) I can sit at my computer 15 ft away, and still see every detail on the screen.

Keep in mind, though that the tube tv's can get very heavy.... mine weighs 206 lbs.

ok...people need to quit screaming sony..."YAY sony....its the bestest!!!!"
whats so good about it???
oh no answer?

ok...for a 32-36 incher look at panasonic or toshiba for the best bang for your buck. I like the toshiba cinema series myself. It has the same if not better picture quality than any other set out there, and its lower priced. Your parents will get all the inputs they could ever want, with a price a couple hundred less than a sony. If you have cable, you will like the dual tuner picture in picture. The sound on these sets is very nice. All around great tv. If you want to go lower end, check out the panasonics. Not quite as many features, but still a good all around tv.

If you have a Sams Club membership, check them out. They have some nice sets, including a Philips WS HDTV for around $888

First off, I own a 40" xbr sony 4x3 directy view HDTV.

Absolutely worthless. Worst puchase ever. Useless. Way too small.

I also own a 51" samsung DLP HDTV, very nice for the living room at 7' distance.

I own a 65" mits HDTV at 11' distance.

Now with three HDTVs you would think I have some experience in this area.

I NEVER WATCH the 40" sony...too small. The samsung is very nice though but for games/hdtv/movies, I'm watching the mits.

And another thing - if you don't like RPTVs then you haven't seen a good RPTV. Anybody wanna buy a piece of crap sony 40" XBR tv?

wow...I am looking at the HLN507W and the WS-65513 myself right now...its a toss up since they are so close in price.

Thanks for adding the bit about the Wegas being worthless

Hrmm... spidey, Samsung made a 51" dlp? I thought both it was 50" (HLM/HLN 507W)... just wondering.

I'm currently looking for a HLN437W. Not sure if I should pre order or wait until the stores stock up and see if that affects the prices.

One Q: In the dark (lights all turned off), what are the black levels like?

Is the size the only thing you can find to bitch about? Of course a 40" 4:3 TV isn't going to give you as large a 16:9 viewable image as a 51" or 65" native 16:9 TV. Duh, common sense people!

I have yet to own a TV that wasn't a Wega (though my next will likely not be, unless Sony has a compelling 16:9 Wega), I loved both of them. I challenge you to find a standard definition 4:3 TV that will produce a better looking 16:9 image than a Wega. Component inputs, vertical compression turned on. Of course it won't be a big picture, it's a 4:3 TV... Can you do it?
