TV recommendation.. ours finally gave out

We had a Sony Bravia 36inch tube TV that finally gave in..

We don't need anything fancy as we don't have cable or anything and we don't watch any blueray/movies/play games with it.

The tv is probably on for 5 hours every day(whether people watch it or not is a different story)

Any recommendations on a no-frills tv set?

We'd like to keep it under $1000

Thanks

We sit probably about 10-15 feet away. Right now we have a satellite dish with international channels we mainly watch. (NO HD)

We have dvd players hooked up but they are rarely ever used.

Well, that makes for a difficult recommendation then. At 15' with an HD source, I'd just go with the absolute biggest DLP you can get. At 10' with an HD source, you could still go with a huge DLP or you might opt for a smaller plasma (~50").

However, at 10' with an SD source, you're likely to see image degredation with anything larger than 37-42". At 15' with an SD source, you could go up to 50" before seeing image degredation.

Really, there are some major caveats with buying a new HDTV to watch your SD satellite shows. One is that your shows are 4:3 instead of 16:9. That means you'll either have to stretch the image or have big black bars on the left and right of the screen. Another is that SD looks worse on an HDTV than on an SDTV, because the HDTV has a much higher native resolution (usu. 1920x1080) than an SDTV (720×480).

If you're seriously not going to upgrade your satellite to HD and not have any other sources, then I'd recommend finding the biggest SDTV you can on craigslist.

That'd be my suggestion. If you have no use for HD, then no need to spend money on it. Craigslist an older SDTV for $100-$200 and be done with it.

Thanks for the suggestion guys, say in the future (2 years) I might wanna bring in FiOS tv. I want to keep the option open for HD since it might occur in the near future and don't want to be stuck with a SD tv.

  1. Buy SDTV from Craigslist for $200.
  2. 2 years from now, buy HDTV for half the price it is today.
  3. Then, sell SDTV on Craigslist for $200.
  4. ...
  5. Profit

I think you might have a very valid point..... checking CL now. WOW! A lot of people are giving them away for free! Now I just need to rent something to carry it...
