TV Recommendation: 42", 1080P, $600-700

Hi guys,

I'm currently using a Panasonic TC-P42U2 (1080P Plasma, 900 lines of *moving* resolution), and am looking for a slight upgrade. I have someone willing to pay me most of the cost for my current TV, allowing me to upgrade to something slightly better.

I use the TV for movies and as a secondary computer monitor. I like the color depth of plasmas, but the image retention as a monitor is worrisome (I haven't had any problems yet, though). I'm open to Plasmas and LCDs, but they absolutely must be 1080P; I will not consider 720P TVs (since again, I'm using this as a monitor as well).

Any recommendations? If all else fails, I'll consider the Panasonic S2 Plasma. I'm also intrigued by the low price on the TC-L42U25 ($550 on Amazon) - is it a decent display?

You can find a panny g25 for $700ish on sale, vizio 3sv pcs is supposed to be good.

Yeah, I was eyeing that one. I've read an entire 4-page thread on AVS Forum about G25 buzzing though, which has me worried. Some people say it's just annoying, while others say that it's loud and unbearable. My current TC-P42U2 does buzz, and although it's annoying, it's not ridiculously loud. It's no worse than the whine from a CRT TV. I heard that Panasonic removed a layer of protective glass from somewhere in the newer displays though, making the buzz louder, which is my primary concern.

Hmm, I wonder if I should take a gamble. If it's a fairly uncommon problem or something that the average Joe doesn't think twice about (only the elitests get up-in-arms about), then I should be able to live with it.

Eh, screw it. I just ordered the TC-P42G25. The price is excellent, the picture quality is supposedly superb, and hopefully the buzz will be livable.

I have the S2 42". I only get a buzzing when turning the unit off. It is a great tv and from what I have read, the G25 is an awesome tv.

Well, it just came in, and I have only great things to say about it.

The picture quality is great. With my previous TC-P42U2, the picture was more vivid that my normal monitor (greater color saturation), but otherwise it wasn't anything to really write home about. I found myself still watching movies on my 23" NEC EA231WMi when I was by myself rather than turning off the monitor and moving back to watch things on the TV. With this thing, I had the picture cloned on both displays, and the G25 was amazingly more vivid and had far better colors. It just looked awesome.

There is no buzzing noise to speak of. My previous U2 panel emitted a bit of buzz when it was on, but nothing that I couldn't look past. This TV, despite the reports from dozens of others, seems to be completely silent. I'm thrilled.

The stand and remote that came with this one are both upgrades compared to the U2 panel. The OSD has more options, giving you slightly better control over various aspects of the display. It also has an ethernet port built in, as well as USBs with an optional WiFi adapter (though expensive).

Overall, for what I paid ($750ish), I give it a 9.5/10, with points lost only due to the boring bezel and thickness of the TV. I'm completely satisfied with all of the things that matter.
