TV question before buying a new console

Hi all! I currently have a Sharp Aquos 37" 720p LCD TV that I bought a long time ago for tremendous amount of pennies (1800CAD). It was the best model money could buy lol.

Now I still have this TV (we're not TV fans and most of the time we use it for Netflix and stuff like that). I also have a PS3 that I mostly use for Netflix, Youtube and some gaming. GTA5 and Last of Us still look good enough.

I'm tempted to jump on a PS$ deal including GTA5 and Last of Us Remastered...but my question is:

Should I get a new 1080p TV first?

The thing is, I don't want to dish out too much money on a TV that will only marginally be used. As I said, I don't watch TV, I mostly stream from Netflix and watch stuff via my PS3 that is connected to both ouy PCs. So a simple 1080p/60Hz TV would do the trick IF and only if I need to buy a new one.

Just get the PS4 and see how you like the way it looks. If it is fine for you, then you don't need to spend the money. It would be especially wasteful if you don't end up playing the games that much either.

I played my PS4 on a Sony 42" 720p before donating it and games looked fine, 720p at 37" should look fine and you should wait until you feel ready for a new TV (could've taken advantage of black friday). If you go 45" or higher, 1080p is basically a must have.

I dunno, your question seems kind of contradictory. If you don't use your TV much, by extension you won't be using your PS4 much, so why are you buying a PS4?

TBH, I think it's kind of a waste of money to go half way on your entertainment upgrades by only upgrading to a PS4 and not upgrading your TV as well. I'd either upgrade both or upgrade none.

I said I don't watch TV but I use it for streaming, Netflix, etc.

Just want to know if 720p with a PS4 is worth it or should I replace the screen.

I think you can google this but IIRC detecting the difference between 720p and 1080p on a 37" is difficult depending on the distance from the screen. Google should help determine those distances.

IMO it's not worth it to drop ~$400 on a PS4 without upgrading your TV unless:

1) You really want to play a PS4 game that you can't play on PS3
2) You really want to play a PS4 game that is markedly better than the PS3 version beyond the graphical difference (Shadow of Mordor)
3) You need the PS4 to play with other people with PS4s

The PS3 is actually superior to PS4 in terms of streaming content from a NAS/HTPC. I'm pretty sure PS4 has zero DLNA capability and PS4's Netflix, Hulu, etc. apps are identical in quality to the PS3 versions (except maybe less menu lag).

I think 37" @ 720p would be fine as long as you're still good with the screen size. It all depends on your setup. I could have bought a larger TV for my bedroom when I donated one to a family member, but I thought the screen size was perfect for its use. So I bought another one same size, just a little fancier.

Good points guys! We just moved in a new house together and the living room is quite larger than our former one. So now my screen is looking tiny lol...but I can grab a comfy chair and sit closer to my TV so distance is not really a problem.

Looks like the TV would be the better buy first...or both at the same time...

I found this in another thread:
