TV problems- picture+sound turn off after seconds

I'm a college student... my TV loses the picture after a bit- it starts shaking, and eventually goes black, or becomes disproportionately displayed on the screen...

but my roommate's tv, which we've been using in lieu of mine being crapped out, has just developed some problems, in that the sound+picture cuts out, though the power indicator stays lit on the front of the tv. any ideas? Anyone know where eol tv model service menu instructions + codes can be accessed? Thanks.
