Link to furniture

I just bought this piece on super clearance. I have a 42" flat screen LCD. the height of the furniture piece is 32". do you think it will be too high to put the TV on there? I will be sitting at the closest 5 feet awayin my office chair if i am computing, but if i am sitting in my TV watching chairs, it will be about 8-10 ft away in these bad boys chairs. According to the website, the seat is about 21" off the ground.

at 8-10' away, it will be slightly high, but not overly bad. At 5' away you will most likely be getting a sore neck after too long.

Thanks for the quick response. If it's too high, i may use it as a place to store stuff, as it's a beautiful piece of furniture anyways and i got a steal on all of the pieces. Im going to have to go look at some more furniture stores closing sales.

Its certainly not as bad as people mounting Plasma displays over their fireplace mantle -- now thats way too high. I think you will get away with it at 8-10' no problem.

Edit: On a computer chair, usually you are situated much higher than on a couch (about 1'), so it probably won't be that bad either. I forgot about this point.

Cool!

I'm thinking you may want to raise your speakers up on milk crates or something temporary to see if they sound better. Get them off the ground so that they are closer to the screen in terms of anchoring effects and dialog if you are running stereo. I am not familiar with your speakers so I do not know if they have been strangely optimized for such a low proximity to the ground.

Ah, if they are recommended for ear level, then you probably should try for that. Typically in box speakers, the vertical dispersion of the tweeter is only good for ±10° at best. While the tweeter is not horn loaded (which would narrow the vertical margin even more), it does seem to have some sort of directivity control due to the shape of the plate the tweeter is mounted on. So, the listening window is somewhat narrow

What this means is that anything beyond this angle causes frequencies above ~2khz to disappear very quickly. What this means for you is that beyond this angle, consonances will be difficult to hear. Since consonances are directly linked to the ability to distinguish one word from the next, this will have an huge affect on dialog intelligibility.

In addition, due to the proximity of the woofer cone from the floor, there will be some bump in the bass/lower midrange which will increase the lack of dialog intelligibility.

If you can bring the speakers even 1" in front of the TV cabinet, this should help minimize early reflections as well.

Furthermore, since the crossover is pretty high at 4.5khz, the 6.5" woofer will be very direct at these frequencies facilitating another narrow window of listening for good intelligibility.

While I have listed several negatives or faults, don't lose hope. All of them can be improved drastically just by bringing the speakers as close to ear level as possible.

^ i guess i will try eggcrates for now to hear the difference, but i'm going to have to find something that will be more acceptable to go with the rest of my room. It's a pain to balance the aethetics of the room while being acoustically sound as well. Thanks :)

yup, depends on how much money you want to spend on it. If you are getting a subwoofer, you could just get two and use those as stands. Or you can probably order a pair of stands for <$100
