TV out on 8500LE - won't fit to screen

I've been using a 3 metre composite cable that came with a GF4 until today when I got a Belkin 5 metre one on a UK PAL tv. On the 3 metre cable it wouldn't properly detect the tv and would just do 640x480 at 60Hz and as long as I left it as that it would fit the tv screen. Now on the 5 metre cable it detects the tv as 512x384 at 30Hz interlaced with a maximum of 720x480 at 60Hz. The problem is that the tv is actually showing 1152x864 (my desktop resolution) zoomed in on 512x384 segments, ie it is not stretched to fit the screen.

Bump and update.

When I start up with tv out enabled it appears fine on tv but in black and white. When windows starts it turns to colour and screws up.
If I restart while tv out is enabled when windows boots up my monitor will be set it 47Hz interlaced.
From what I can tell the tv is displaying the desktop resolution (800x600, 1152x864 whatever it may be) in segments of 512x384 which is then cut to widescreen (16:9).

Chances are you weren't actually getting 640X480 out the composite. 512X384 sounds about right, though I'm not sure about the refresh (60 Hz is typical for a tv out). You need to drop your resolution to 640X480, try at 60 Hz. You might be able to get it to display 800X600, but it won't actually be 800X600.
