TV Networks get owned by low ratings....

"As the ratings have rolled in for the first three weeks of the new television season, one question has dominated the conversations inside the industry's executive suites: what the heck is going on?"

Anyone think its because of the absolute crap they have on now??? Who in the world at FOX thought anyone was going to watch Joe Millionaire again after what happened after the first season of it? They did it to themselves.

I only follow a couple of series anymore.... at most 5 shows a week I watch (well have replay record and I watch later 🙂 )

yep

TV is crap

give me family guy, futurama, and the simpsons, and i'm done
anything else i couldn't care less 😀
shows like "everybody loves Raymond" drive me batty.. it SUCKS!

The entire new lineup stinks to high heaven. I've never seen a fall lineup of new shows so stale and lousy. They are all clones of clones of clones... nothing new or inventive.

Bleagh.

Simpsons, CSI, Who's Line is it Anyway, and Scrubs are the only shows I really look forward to anymore...

I've got all sorts of problems with Nielsen's methodology too (and I work for an advertising agency.) But I agree with the closing sentiments of the article, there's simply not all that many new shows this season that appeal to young men. Couple that with heavy computer/game usage by the typical guy in that age range and tumbling ratings for that demographic is not at all surprising.

One other major factor they totally overlook in that article is the increasing number of channel choices available to an increasing percentage of the population. Satellite and cable companies keep expanding their offerings and gain market pentration. Many cable networks are doing a great job of targeting and retaining viewers in their niche markets. There's a ton of channels out there with a strong young male pull and while their ratings are small individually, the sheer volume of them out there now can lead to a significant dent in lost viewers on the major networks.

I don't watch TV, the only entertainment I get from my entertainment center is from watching DVDs. TV has sucked for years. And if it wasn't for my kids I wouldn't have cable TV either.

Imagine the Nielson ratings for the 18-24yo male population once Doom3 or HalfLife2 hit the shelves...

Network television is boring.

Personaly the GF and i spend all of our TV time watching those reality home improvement shows on TLC like Trading Spaces. I watch comedy central and cartoon network only.

The other day i saw the WB's new "Tarzan" and i think it put me to sleep, how retarded.

The only thing I watch now is the Cartoon Network most of the time. 🙂
Especially Adult Swim and Toonami. 😀

Also the Sci Fi channel.....when they actually play something scifi and not "horror". I miss that show called Exposures. (I think that is what it was called) Where they would have people's own short movies or clips.

Farscape, B5, and occasionally Enterprise.

The only currect shows I watch (* network shows):

Sopranos (if the new season ever starts)
The Shield
Nip Tuck
Carnivale
Dead Like Me
*ER
*Friends
*Will and Grace
*Law and Order
*Simpsons

Sometimes I watch The Practice, but it got REALLY left-wing preachy last season.

Good shows.

I cannot wait until The Shield and The Soprano's return.

Also The Wire.

Interesting theory:

Mr. Wurtzel had another suspicion, having to do with who is chosen for the Nielsen sample. He said that Nielsen tends to skip homes where the equipment may be extremely complicated to wire, and that with more homes now adding digital boxes and satellite dishes, those homes might be skipped more often, meaning heavy viewers of television are being systematically excluded.

This could easily explain a drop in younger viewers if they skip over homes with high tech equipment. This past two years have been banner years for people switching to HD and the 18-35 age group is the most likely to do it.

Oh, and Nielson does NOT count when you are viewing an HD channel. So if they DID wire up a box at a home with HD, if they watch one of the networks in HD, it does not count.

Could it be, perhaps, that Reality TV sucks?
Aren't there only like two reality TV shows on the (big four)networks now? I could be wrong, I hardly have time for TV anymore.

I can't believe ABC even stays in business. I realized this year that when MNF started that it was the first time I had watched ABC since football was over.

Same with NBC. I couldn't even name two new shows on that network.

All I watch on CBS regularly is CSI, occasionally I'll watch Survivor if I have time.

Even cable shows can't keep my attention. I'll watch Monster Garage and Carnivale every week, other than family guy reruns or college football, I pretty much just ignore the TV.

I'd probably watch more TV if I had a DVR, but right now it comes down to watching TV or getting my work done, work always takes priority.
