Hello,

I have a POS Phillips CRT TV that does 480p, 720p and 1080i. I have a PS3 and I'm connecting to the television with an HDMI cable.

In all three resolutions I do not get the full display on my television. At 480p I am missing some screen area from the top and bottom. At 720p and 1080i I am missing a lot of area from the left and right. By "missing area" I mean there is stuff off screen that I should be seeing. The entire TV shows the image, but it seems the image is stretched or something and stuff I should see is chopped off. For example in Resistance I only see half my health bar, in Marvel Ultimate Alliance I cannot see my character select window and most of the map.

I am trying to narrow the problem down, I see three things that could be wrong here:

1) My TV
2) HDMI Cable
3) PS3

Any suggestions?

There's a couple of things in play:

1. TV's normally have overscan, meaning they will cut off some of the sides and/or top of video sources to make sure the entire visible screen itself is covered by video. It can be as much as 5 percent or so. It's also possible to have underscan.

2. Your TV expects to see very specific "timings" from your input sources to display HDTV formats. It's quite possible the PS3 isn't providing exactly what your set wants to see.

3. Your set might have fine tuning controls to adjust the picture; it may not.

4. Look at this thread at avsforum.com for more info about PS3/HDMI:

5. PS3 may require HDMI 1.3-equipped TV's to work correctly.
