TV buying advice, 720/768p, 32"

Hi

I hope that this is the right forum to post this question.

I am in the market for a new 32" TV, non-3D, and I guess at 32", 1080p does not matter so 720/768p will do. Another factor is the budget range that I have.

Use in: bedroom

Viewing distance: 8-8.5 feet

First of all, I have a few general questions:
1) LCD v LED : does it really matter.
2) I have a non sine UPS at home that is upto 1.25 kVA (though that non sine is very bad), can I safely use an LED/LCD on it?

OK, so where I live, the options that come in my range (~350$) and are available are:

LCD's:
1) Samsung LCD TV LA32D400/Samsung LCD TV LA32D403/Samsung LCD TV LA32D450. very close in price, don'r really know the difference
2) Sony Bravia LCD TV KLV - 32BX320
3) LG LCD TV 32LD340
4) Panasonic LCD TV TH-L32X20R

The only LED that I can find in my range is:
1) SAMSUNG LED EH4000

There a couple of other Samsungs for about $70-100 that I might consider if there is a compelling reason to do so:
1) Samsung 32" D4003 LED TV
2) Samsung 32" EH4500 Smart LED TV
3) Samsung 32” EH5000 Series 5 Full HD LED TV

I apologize in advance for listing so many options - I am a complete noob as far as TVs are concerned (used to run a 21" CRT was the past 15 years 😛).

You don't say where this set will be viewed. Bedroom? Living Room? Den? I have a 32" LCD in my BR that, while not from any of the makers you list, does everything I need for that room. Were I to shop for a display for my LR, it would require an entirely different set of criteria to make the grade. I would advise you not to get caught up in all the "featureitis" that the manufacturers load these display up with, if you really don't need them. I have a Roku hooked up to my BR set, and that alone makes the setup perfect for my needs there.

The big questions is as follows: what's your viewing distance?

I had friends who bought a 32" TV in their livingroom with a 10' viewing distance. It was laughably small, and they wound up upgrading to a 37" (still too small) within 6 months.

OTOH, I sit 3.5' from a 32" 1080p TV as my computer monitor. Anything larger than 32" would be too large.

So, I can't really help until you share your viewing distance. Also, please don't guess; get out the measuring tape. My brother is shopping for a TV and thought that he's "about 7 feet" from his TV. He measured, and it's actually 11 feet. Those two distances are worlds apart for TV-size recommendations.

Well, if this were a livingroom setup, I'd recommend 50-60" at 8 feet. That's probably a bit big for a bedroom though. How would you feel about going with a 37-42" TV? The cost wouldn't be much more, but the screen would be much bigger.

I don't have a TV in the bedroom, so I'll let others tackle that side of it. BTW, is WAF a factor here?

Even with a 42", 1080p wouldn't really matter other than the issue of scaling or connecting a PC to it. I don't think there's much of a difference between LCD and LED in general. There can be a big difference between individual TVs though. I haven't researched them in while, so I'll let others tackle that as well 🙂

LED and LCD look most different in dark scenes. I've seen tons of cheaply made LCD TVs that have pretty notable blacklight bleed, and watching a series like Firefly with the space scenes it's pretty bad. For something like football or bright games, it's much less of an issue. I'd get an LED LCD over an LCD if the price isn't too widely different. Or a Plasma.
