TV 5.1 Message

Sometimes when i watch tv shows it says available in HD tv and 5.1
I don't have cable, just a tv and a receiver and some cheapy antenna.

My receiver usually goes to dolby when it is present, but the tv is connect through left and right wires to the receiver. Can i get 5.1 surround or do i need one of those HD TVs?

Thanks!

You would need a digital cable set top box (STB) (or a satellite receiver) with a dedicated digital output (optical or coaxial) connected to a 5.1 stereo receiver in order to receive true 5.1 digital sound.

With just the left and right (white and red) AV stereo cables, you can't get true 5.1, but your stereo receiver sounds like it can probably do Dolby ProLogic, which takes the 2 channel audio and makes a virtual surround sound. If your receiver can do Dolby ProLogic 2, then that might sound pretty good.

Hope that helped ya!

Yes, you really get 5.1.

You'll need some way to receive/tune the HD signal though and a receiver that supports dolby digital.

thanks ! ... so can i can't really get 5.1 with just an antenna eh?
At least i have pro logic II ... still doesn't sound the same as digital surround ... and i have an onkyo receiver ... uggh ... this particular receiver has a weak center ouput ... i hate it ... i need to upgrade ... it's also got a tv surround simulation of some sort, but doesn't work that well .. stil sounds like stereo with a center.

Thanks for the reply guys!

You can get the HD signal (including DD5.1) with an antenna, but then you need to do something with that signal...that's where an HDTV tuner comes in 😉 (whether in an HDTV set, set-top tuner box, PC HDTV tuner like I have, whatever)

Then of course you'll need some way to display the signal (HDTV, high-resolution PC monitor) and play the sound (5.1 computer speakers, HT receiver that supports Dolby Digital, etc.)

oh ... thanks... maybe i'll get an upgrade within the next year or so ... is it that clear?
what if you have a messed up signal like how my channels aren't really clear... wether or not i have cable ... but then again i haven't had cable for 2 years... maybe it improved since then ..

but...thanks!

prologic 2 isn't bad. it sounds pretty accurate for the most part. I use it whenever real 5.1 isn't avaliable.
