Tux Rental: Talk about ripoff..grr...

A Friend and I went to rent tuxes for prom and just about all the places quoted about $100 bucks! Last year it was about $75 for Jr prom and that was expensive sounding...I think these tux places must make a killing off rentals during prom season....anyways, howmuch did you guys pay for your tux this year?

hehe, I loved having a friend that worked at the tux store for me. I paid for my junior prom tux and nothing more...and I've had a reason to rent one for the last 3 years too 🙂

Its a seasonal thing guy. Like the umbrella salesman that marks up the prices when it rains, so do the Tuxedo rentals go up around prom time.

Forethought would've helped you in this situation. Rent your tux earlier next time.

$100? Damn, I hope it doesn't cost me that much. A friend of my is getting married next month and I'm a groomsman, but apparently we pay for our own tux. I told him I'm taking the cost of the tux out of their wedding present! 😀

Hmm, well the place i got myne says lowest price gauranteed...so i'll go over there with these printed coupons for MW and see if they can match it...when i got it the guy said bring in ads and well pricematch them...

if your young you can buy one for the rental costs you will pay in your life.

They have an alternative to als format wear (the most expensive IMO)... was about $55 out the door for everything.

I don't see how anyone can justify spending hundreds of dollars for one night of your life..especially if you're a broke high school student.

Everyone tells me its a great experiance, its a night you'll never forget, and the fact that all my friends are going makes me want to go. Well its a once in a lifetime thing...ill learn something either way.

I see..I could never give in to peer pressure like that.

Two of my friends got married last year. I was in both wedding parties.
$110 for one of the tuxes, $125 for the other.

In the case where you're in a wedding party, a tux you already own won't really help you. You have to have the same tux as the other groomsmen.

I just reserved tuxes for myself and the wedding party: $80 each for a nice complete set, plus a free one after 4 or 5 rentals (not sure) from MW....

yeah, talk about it. I'm a groomsman on May 24th. Dang tux rental is costing me $118. Geez. Fiance's dress only cost a little bit more and she keeps the dang thing.

just the oppisate. your getting a good deal, ever see how much chicks spend on dresses

seriously...mad money there, and they only wear them once, and at most twice, ever! It's crazy...but they probably have the money since we pay for everything. 😱 😉 (Well, in my relationships it was true...😛)

Went back to gary's, the guy said he cant change the price since i dont know what exact models are for that price...but he did give me free upgrade. I got the tux which is called a "007" which is worth 30 more if u went to rent it 🙂 But the first thing when he saw my reciept before i even brought up price matches was "duuude who did this, they hooooked u up!!" So i guess im satisfyed now...

Because it's a once in a lifetime event.

I suppose funerals are even worse, spending thousands on something that is a once not-in-your-lifetime event...

I remember going to rent a tux and a "Gingiss" just opened near my house. They had this wheel spinning thing and I spun it and got 50% off my rental. I think my rental was around 80 bucks? (I choose some additional items). Well I paid a deposit of like 25 bucks and the rest of the payment was around 55 dollars. I went in a week later to finish paying it off (the due date) and then I left. A day before the event I was going to (about a week after the last payment), I went to pick up my tux. Well after recieving all the items, the manager was running the store that day and said I owed 55 dollars. I gave him a wierd look and told him I had paid a week early (some teenager was working the day I came in and paid). He then said "well you are just going to have to pay me the remaining and if I find your check, I will cancel this one". I got angry and then said I would be back. I went to the bank and requested for them to print out my account history. Then I drove back to the store and showed the manager my account history from the bank (it had a check "Gingiss" that was cashed for about 55 dollars). He then said "where did you get this? You just go home and print this off of your computer?" This made me even more angry, but then the teenager that was working the other day came in, I told him my story and said he remembered that I had wrote a check. The manager gave him wierd looks then finally let me leave.

I think that's what happened, the teenager forgot to give me the receipt since it was still attached to the tux.

Well, you don't spend your own money... but i would spend a lot to remember my parents in their last moment.

I was in a wedding back in January. I also had to buy my own tux. This was something that apparently has changed. I asked my Mom if paying for our own tuxes was typical, and she said it wasn't back when she got married.
