Tutoring for the SATs

Unfair, especially when you are looking for an ego boost and want your 1530 to look special 😉

Study books and practice tests for a student ot use on their own? Fine
But having someone personally watch over you for hours gives an advantage to the wealthy student.

Analyze it relatively, the actual quantification of the score wasn't important, it was the point behind it.

Idiot.

shut up about your house

I would say any specialized books or tutoring makes the test less fair in principle. That said, I would recommend making use of them.

BAH DAMN SAT. I'm taking it this Saturday. The test is a joke. OK perhaps not so much as it used to be, but I know kids who take classes every other day for HOURS. This ridiculous because they're getting a higher score by spending THOUSANDS of dollars on tuition for a test while the rest of us are in the real word. Man I hate this test.

Sounds like someone's jealous cause they couldn't get a class.

You could argue that it's unfair because its unfair how the richer kids can get higher scores by going to classes. Just cause you can't afford it doesn't mean you still can't get help. Go get a damn book or two.

Oh and my class at Kaplan cost $700. I went for 3 hours twice a week. I went up 200 pts according to their diagnostic, which I think wasn't very accurate, but nonetheless I still increased.

That's like saying it's not fair for private school students to be exposed to more opportunies and rigorous course work because it gives them an advantage in getting into college. Unless you believe in Communism, this is the way it's gonna be

Wrong...utterly wrong....

The SAT is a single, limited test that cannot be delved into further by taking classes the way school subjects can be.

Classes/tutors help rich, mediocre students get big increases; and helps fairly intelligent rich kids get small increases.

If you are smart in the first place, it shouldn't matter and the test is a great way to set yourself apart from grade-whores with no IQ or ability to do basic problems under timed conditions... 99th percentile without any studying or even a good nights sleep. Do some basic algebra, calculate a few angles, and grasp the idea of the english language and you are good to go!
The real from tutoring help is just familiarity, practice with time if you are slow, and lame tricks that the college board uses when writing test questions.

san marino only means something to people that live in this san gabriel valley area.

it means you're a rich spoiled sob. lol.

no, it means we got in before prices skyrocketed 😛

SAT measures how much time and money you spend studying for it.

i knew a few girls who had like regular saturday/sunday school for SAT classes. they got 1580/1590.

but i also knew two guys who got 1600 by studying on their own and never taking a class.

it helps the rich people but the extremely smart ones definately do good on it.

Granted I took my SAT's 13+ or so years ago, but I was tutored for them and seen a huge difference.

PSAT: 1280
SAT: 1460
The studying and tutor's made a difference for me so I would suggest going for it.

I didn't study and got drunk the night before. Scored a 1200, partly because I didn't know a wrong answer were worse than no answer. Content with the score but probably should have checked out the nature of the test just a little bit.

from objective to subjective. when a person grades on the essay part, it will never be objective.
fair? I guess not.

Take advantage of all resources that are available to you.

When I was younger I use to do everything myself, but I quickly learn in the real working world that it is more productive when you learn from others & work in group.

The SAT is not a measure of intelligent. It is just a test of how willing you are at studying and work within a set parameter dictated by educational institutions. Therefore, play along till you get out into the working environment.

Good luck!

PSA:

Life isn't fair.

Get over it. There will always be someone out there who has an advantage over you, be it natural, or acquired.

The only way to make life "fair" is to disable and limit everyone to the lowest common denominator. Such a society would be the most oppressive ever known.

Freedom and equality of opportunity does NOT mean equality of outcome or advantage. Never has, never will.
