Turtle Collection

While I don't think you're necessarily for real, a favorite thing of mine to do as a youngster was to pick up turtles that were on the road and probably going to be hit anyway, and just hang onto them a while. They're hardy and easy to care for. I would observe them for a while, and then turn them loose somewhere safe. I wouldn't recommend doing this with rarer species though. By all means help them off the road, but it's probably best to leave them where they are.

I don't see how this is any worse than buying a turtle that someone else took from the wild and sold to the pet store, or one that was raised on a farm which we know nothing about. Box turtles and other tortoises you find in the shops are usually take from the wild, at least in my area.
