I should start this off by mentioning that I played the demo (PS3) and was fully bored with the game within 5 minutes of playing. I immediately deleted it and moved on.
But like the topic summary states, I got my hands on the X360 and PS3 versions of the game and figured I share my (quick) impressions. Please keep in mind that I only played for about a hour on the X360 version, so you know, grain of salt and all that.
So I kicked things off with the X360 version (via VGA) since I had heard that it had a superior frame rate (among other things). I played through the intro and got my Turok adventure underway and played for about 45 minutes. I then slipped in the PS3 version (via HDMI) just to see the difference and I have to say that, although the PS3 version seems to have a slightly better lighting model and higher contrast--the framerate was all over the place. It's pretty bad when you see some drop in an in-game cutscene, and the models appears to be slightly less detailed. There was texture pop-in as well--nothing in or even near the realm of Mass Effect, but it was noticable. Also, the tearing was pretty bad. So after a few mins I returned to the X360 version and continued on. I just figured I would get that out the inevitable comparison.
Back to the game.
I went into the game basically expecting to experience what the demo showed me--that its was just another run-of-the-mill FPS built on the Turok franchise (btw, I loved the N64 Turok). I have to say that playing the game form the beginning to the point where I am (again, about 1 hour in) has kind of surprised me because I'm actually starting to enjoy myself. The game appears to have more personality than the demo implies. The game actually has some pretty good level design (relatively speaking--it's no Crysis), the dinos looks really really good (especially the T-Rex!) and are animated extremely well.
I just got the bow and it's basically the railgun/sniper rifle in the game. The left trigger is used to scope/aim and the RT is pulled to draw your bow. The RT is held to build up (draw) power and then **PLUNK**--dead. It's pretty cool and kinda satisfying.
The knife is obtained very early in the game as well (before the bow even), and is basically easy-mode, heh. In short, it's a press of the RT when you're near a dino/baddie's back. So not just anywhere near someone, you actually have to be in the right position--like directly behind them. It's by far the most brutal way of killing someone, and it appears it will never get old seeing him slam his knife into the top of a grunts head or slice a dino's thoat as he headlocks it. It's very satisfying and the death moves appear to be mixed up (although I dont know how many there are).
I dont know if you will have an AI partner throughout the entire game, but for the first hour I played there was someone with me and they sometimes talk a lot of shit to you or the bad guys never really repeating lines.
The guns, so far, feel pretty generic, without weight, and slightly uninspired. Kind of like the guns in Red Faction or Hellgate--kinda like wooden models that have been painted blue or wrapped in tin foil. It's odd and a bit of a turn off.
Also, acheivement junkies should not that it seems that a LOT of the acheivements are geared twoards MP stuff.
All in all, so far it appears to be above average than the standard FPS, and a TON better than Area 51.
Anyone else pick up the game?
