Turning the Wii remote off during gameplay

My son has the game Spiderman Friend or Foe for the Wii. This game allows two people to play at the same time in a fighting environment similar to say Kingdom Hearts. It also allows single player where your "partner" simply becomes an NPC and fights along side of you. While playing the single player game, a second player can take control of that NPC character at anytime by simply activating a second Wii Remote and Nunchuck. However, I have not discovered a way to revert the second player's character back into an NPC should they decide not to play anymore during game play. I am not sure if it is even possible but I assume that it may work if I could turn off the second controller and nunchuck during the game. Is there a standard way to do this? I want to at least give it a try.

hmm... short of taking out a battery, i've never figured out how to turn a controller off either.

I usually just let it auto shut-off. I'm not sure there is a way to shut them off.

I tried waiting for that but I guess it doesn't work for this game. I may not have waited long enough though. How long does the standard auto turn off take?

It takes about 10 minutes.
