Turning one monitor off without disconnecting it?

I'm planning on having a monitor for my new PC running Vista, but I also want to hook it up to my TV to use media center (I have TV tuners) and occasionally play FPS games on it. I want to keep both hooked up at the same time because I want to keep the PC behind a desk where its hard to get to. But I only want the TV on when I play movies, and the monitor on when I surf the web. Is there a way to chose which monitor to use and ONLY use one at a time without the other one using up resources (i.e. switching one off isn't the solution).

You can select which monitor is active with your display properties dialog. That or find some overpriced DVI A/B switch.
