I'm trying to turn off the 'maintence required" light on my 02 honda civic Lx, and this is what I"m seeing from other sites:

"...The answer is even in your manual! Hold down the trip meter button, turn the car to on, wait about 20 seconds, start the car, and let go of the button. Light is reset until the next mileage interval...."

questions:

1. what is the 'trip meter button"? I have 2 buttons on my dash. one right below the speedometer, and one right below the other meter (the one with the RPM's). The one under the speedometer is easy to press, but the other one, i am not able to push down.

2. does turning car to 'on' mean to start the car(engine running)?

I tried it and it did not work, thats why I was wondering.

I don't know the Civic, so here's just a guess about the two buttons:
The button that you cannot press is for adjusting the brightness of the dashboard lights. It rotates. The other button is the trip button that you can push.

As for "turning the car on," it means you turn the key to the position where all the electrical stuff works (like power windows), but NOT to the point of cranking the engine.

It says right in your post:

1): Hold down trip meter button
2): Turn car to ON (that is Ignition switch to Run Position)
3): Wait 20 seconds or so
4): Start motor, then release trip reset button .. Do Not
turn the Ignition key back to the OFF position. Just go from Run to Start and back to Run

That should do it.

I just did this yesterday to my accord - hold the button to the right of the odometer and then turn the key to the on position and keep holding the button - the light will eventually turn off but keep holding the button! Now start the car and contine to hold the button for about 20 or 30 more seconds - when you release the button the light should stay off for another 7500 miles - if not you didn't hold the button long enough! Be patient!
