Turning off notifications at night?

I would think this would be a simple fix but I am not having luck with it at all.

My android phone gives notification sound during the middle of the night. This really is annoying when youre asleep.

First i tried llama to see what it would do. It actually
worked well but I had some other side effects. The main one being it wouldn't let me turn the phone on vibrate at times. For example, I'd go somewhere that it said was an Unknown Area but I would need to turn the phone on vibrate. I'd look at the phone minutes later and the sound was back to normal. This happened numerous times.

Then I tried Timerrific. I set it to regular volume at 7am. Then at 10 pm I set it to have the notifications down to 0%. The issue is sometimes, actually most of the time it won't stay in the current mode. The mode that it should be in will have a green dot next to it. The next mode it's suppose to enter will have a blue dot. I'll look at it throughout the day but it doesn't stay in the 7am mode. At 10 pm it'll change to the right mode but it obviously doesn't stay there either. I know this because I'll get a notification at 5am or something.

Also, I can't turn the phone on vibrate because I need it to ring if my work calls.

And I realize some of the above might be user error but I have tried tons of different configurations without success.

And I guess I could turn off notifications for email all the time but I like to have them during the day/evening.

Any other ideas?

Stock ROM I assume? Many custom ROMs have options built in for "quiet hours" and such. I would look into that.

Yes, phone is stock. No idea if I could change this either. It's a work phone so I am hesitant to do any tinkering.

The only setting I could find is under Settings/battery and data manager. I click on battery mode and Custom battery saver. From there I have the off peak hours start at 10pm and end at 7am. And Turn off data after 15 minutes. I assumed that meant data such as email, etc. would be off between 10 pm and 7 am. but it doesn't work. Again, maybe user error but i still get the emails.

I haven't seen it in any of the roms I've used, but it'd be nice to know if I could add something to any ROM. Either via app or flashed zip as I have the same request as the OP.

Edit: I lied, it IS in CM9

Sense 4 has separate control over alarm volume vs ringtone & notification volume, so I am able to just turn down the volume.

Is that an app? I can only find some kind of HTC theme named since 4.0??

My phone has 'Silent Mode' in 'Sound settings' let you turn off all sounds except media & alarm. Also, in 'Accounts & Sync' setting, disable "Background Data" will turn off most of notifications. Well, the down side is you have to manually do it every time you want them off and on.

Tasker. Or get someone to make a Tasker app factory version for you.

There's an app called "Quiet Sleep" that lets you mute all notifications during a specified time period and also has a whitelist so you can still receive calls from specific numbers. I think you can also set it up to auto-respond to certain numbers with a text message, I haven't really delved into the settings much.

There is a free version and a paid version.

Thanks. Tasker seems good but is a bit pricey. I wish it had a Trial version. I'll check out quiet sleep.

Take a look at Smart Silencer. I've been using it for a couple of months now, and it seems to work pretty good.

Silent Hours looks alright too. I like the purpose of these apps, might have to try a couple!

Llama has a "noisy contacts" option, where it allows some contacts to ring no matter what the other volume settings are. So you just add the people from work to your noisy contacts list for the different profiles, and then if they call, it will always ring.

Unfortunately, for some stupid reason Google went and undid the ability to have notification and ringer volumes different in 4.0.4, so the only way to get it back is to go to 4.0.3 or use a custom ROM. So you can't get as fine grained as you may want, but it's about as good as you're going to get with Android. Blackberry's could do this easily, but sadly anything even approaching BBOS sound profiles has been overlooked by the likes of Google, Microsoft, and Apple. But Llama does give you about the best you're going to get by letting you set the volume for the ringer and notifications to zero, but still allowing specific people to always ring through.

The razr has smart actions; works quite nice; one of the actions can be to disable data; another is slience phone; so during sleep hours no mail; during work hours the phone auto switches to silence+vibrate. works like a charm.

You can use Tasker or you can use a NFC tag that you scan before you go to sleep and scan again when you wake up to toggle notifications (and other settings).

True, NFC tags would be perfect. Now, what phone does the OP have as he neglected this piece of key info.

My Calendar app (CalenGoo) allows me to set sleeping hours to disable sound. Light Flow can be used to set LED notifications as well.

Lightflow has this built in, but you have to set the notifications to be handled by Lightflow (ringtone and vibrate if needed) instead of using the apps them selves.

Lightflow allows you to add ringtone and vibrate functions to apps that by default do not let you choose this, eBay comes to mind. Disable it through the app it self, and let Lightflow handle it. There are sleep settings built in to do exactly what you're asking for, but it does require some setup on your part.

And then, Lightflow doesn't support every app that sends notifications. It supports quite a bit, the list is pretty long, but there are still some it's missing. Though the dev is really good and is quick to answer questions or add new app support. Something to keep in mind.

Locale does this as well I believe, but it's 9.99 for the full version.
