turning off deleted mails in Outlook

I just set up a client on Outlook 2003 using his AOL mail account (he flatly refused to change his e-mail provider), and for some reason the e-mails that he has choosen to delete in AOL show up in Outlook, but they are greyed out and have a line drawn through them. Is there any way to just have them not show up at all? I've looked through the settings and haven't found anything in all the obvious places.

where are they showing up? inbox? deleted items?

sorry...they're showing up in the inbox with the new messages, but as I described (greyed out, strikethrough).
