Turning my computer into TV

Hi there,

I want to have live TV on my PC/Laptop and then want to be able to record shows (atleast 2-3 channels at the same time) and then edit and upload onto youtube(before you tell me, it is illegal to do this, the shows I will upload are legal)

What is the swift way to do this? so the editing and uploading is the least time consuming.

You would have to output the Dish box via Component/Composite as HDCP will be in effect if you tried HDMI.

I dunno. What you are asking is pretty easy to do but I don't feel comfortable telling you how to upload live tv to Youtube no matter that you say it is "legal" for you to do so.

It's only legal if he owns the copyrights, which I seriously doubt. Not many people on AT own television studios and production houses.

There were a number of SD video capture solutions on the market several years ago, the timing was pretty bad for bringing them to market though, about the time hardware and software was capable of video capture became affordable broadcast television went digital. Capture from a source other than OTA has never been simple although at one point it was possible to use a cable ready capture card, that too has for the most part become obsolete, you might as well record to a VHS tape if you're source is a dish receiver.

You are going to run into HDCP restrictions on your DVR or video captures.

Probably, you'll have the greatest luck and freedom with unencrypted OTA broadcast HD.

For subscription TV, the entire setup under Media Center, etc. evaluates HDCP compliance. Once configured, you can record a program to your computer, but you can't move it to another computer, and (from my personal experience) -- you won't likely be able to edit it. I was stunned to find that Roxio reports "you are not allowed to edit," change or burn the restricted content.

With satellite your only alternative for recording shows is the Hauppauge HD Colossus:

In order to use one to record HD shows from your Dish receiver it needs to have component outputs. Otherwise you would be restricted to using HDMI and HDCP would come into play which would prevent you from recording.

btw, there are no shows that you legally can record from Dish and then upload to YouTube...PBS, local broadcasts, whatever, it doesn't matter. TV programs have attached distribution rights and I highly doubt you own any of those rights. That's why you are catching flak for your plan because just about everyone in here is aware of that except maybe for you. If you think you might be covered by the Fair Use clause, think again.

Will also work as well which is what I use to record from my HD Box into my Sage DVR system...
