Tomorrow, I'm turning in my two week notice. It's been a good job, but I'm classified as an intern in marketing and I'm an archeology major (they hired me because I'm good with computers). The pay really sucks and the hours are awful (they limit me to 20 / week). So what should I say in the letter? I like the people and love the store, but it's not a job that can support me...

ROFL. I figured I wouldn't get much. I do lots of climbing and hiking with these guys, so they're good friends, but I'm going to archaeological field school for a month starting on the 8th of May (and I'm pumped about that), and then I've got a $9/hour summer job that I always do (and they knew this). I don't want to piss anyone off, but I also don't want to be over the top about it.

Say or write?

Typed letter of resignation:
"I regret to inform you that I am submitting my resignation, effective <date>, which provides the company with two weeks' notice. Thank you for all the opportunities and challenges that I have experienced in this role. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help in the transition of my role."

To be serious, I'd say keep it short and simple. Something like "as of xx/xx/xx I offically am putting in my two weeks notice of leaving. PEACE".

Go with what HotChic wrote. Never elaborate more than what's necessary in these cases.

Don't burn any bridges be gracious and just say you enjoyed the job and the people you worked with but you need the time for school and the other job you already told them about. You don't owe them a detailed explanation of your life either. Your trying to better yourself and find a job you enjoy as much that can support a living.

Requirements:
- Thank you for not firing me.
- I enjoyed my time there.
- If I can help in anyway to facilitate this transition easier, don't hesitate to ask.
- I'm moving on up, 'enjoy your deathtrap ladies'.
