on IBM laptops its function key + the home/end (they have blue labels)

other laptops have similar hardware based controls...just search for them

Actually on earlier IBM laptops they just had a slider control on the screen itself.

Nowadays what you'll usually find is two symbols that look like the sun, one with rays and one without. You may be able to just press these to control the brightness, but you might have to push them while holding down another key (Fn).

Usually it's done either through shortcut keys like FN + F5, or through software via your specific power settings in the control panel

OP, you really need to read the f'n manual...:)

each laptop is different (you didn't even state what kind of laptop it was), although most involve pressing a fuction key and a PF key or something...
