Turning down job offers after you've accepted them?

So pretty much I've accepted a job offer that pays a little low then what I wanted. I accepted the offer. I did a piss test, background check and they contacted my references. I imagine this cost them money.... So I got another job offer on the phone that pays just right..... I accepted that one as well.

If you turn down an offer can they force you to pay for all that or can they make a bad record for you.

They can't make you pay for that stuff and I don't know what "record" you mean.

I doubt they'd make you pay for it. It's something that THEY wanted to do before employing you, so it should be on their dime.

However, doing something like that will probably burn your bridges with company A. I doubt you'd be able to apply successfully for a job there again.

My wife just did this. She accepted a job, put in her notice at her employer at the time. They said they really want to keep her and had big plans for her, so they gave her a $20k (!!) raise and a promotion. The other job she had accepted originally only paid about $2k more then before her raise/promotion. No way she was going to take it. She called, told them, they were not happy and told her how disappointed they were in her, all that stuff. In the end it worked out best for us, these things happen.

i had to do this once. i accepted a job in VA that was paying housing and a small stipend for the summer, then i got a job with DollyWood which i was actually going to profit from, had to call the other guy back, and tell them that i could not do it, knowing they could in no way match my other offer. the guy was kinda pissed, but understood my poor college student status.

I took a job in NJ and then wound up turning it down when they changed my relocation package so that I'd get paid AFTER I moved. That was not the agreement when I made my verbal acceptance. They cried all kinds of blues but refused to move me so I cut 'em loose.

And this was after 2 trips for me to NJ and one for them to come here to TX to see me. I'm sure that cost them some money.

Yes it will look bad on you and people talk. Nothing you can do about it now and no you don't have to pay.

We had a guy do that once (except he showed up for work and left 4 hours later) and every conference, every get to gether with people in the industry we all made it a point to avoid this guy because of what he did. Found out through the grapevine that he had to move to another state because he couldn't get a job.

Interesting. You'd have to be pretty important for people to talk about you. Although I imagine there could be an online database of things like this.
