As a belated birthday present to myself I mentioned to my doctor about a month ago that I turned 50 in April.

Well then, seems it's time for a digital (no ones and zeros here) prostate exam and a colonoscopy :(

Today is prep day for the colonoscopy. Yippee! I get to eat nothing and in five minutes start laxatives followed at 6pm some salt solution that is suppose to gag you.

Also, when I went to get the prostate exam the urologist sent me for an X-ray and found a kidney stone too big for me to pass. So, on Monday I get to go for lithotripty to break it up.

Isn't life fun. :p

Same, though I had an endoscopy the same day as my colonoscopy.

If you're the type of person who would rather things come out of your colon than go in, take the Valium when they offer it.

Ugh...I just turned 40 this year. Haven't had the finger yet though and I'm definitely not looking forward to that.

I just had a colonoscopy yesterday. The actual procedure was a breeze compared to the prep the day before. Good luck on the stone. They can be painful. Anyway good luck.

I have had a number of stones over the years and most were no fun. Then about 10 years ago they stopped so I have to assume they just continued to form into a stone so big that it wouldn't pass it. I wonder if the lithotripty will break up the stone into ones so small that I'll easily pass them or will they be the normal painful ones? No matter, they've got to come out anyway.

By any chance do you eat a lot or pork or is the kidney stones hereditary?

I wouldn't say a lot, maybe a couple of times a month. My dad has had a couple of kidney stones. Mine are uric acid stones, kinda brownish-orange, not calcium (white), or iron (black).

I've herd that living in certain locations (deep south USA) might also have an influence on kidney stones.

I went seven years between my last stones - last christmas - and my previous ones. Like you, I had one that that my dr. said was to big to physically pass. Don't you just love those words. I was not happy since I had had an endoscopic lithotripsy with a previous stone. I was very sore and felt as if I still had a stone for several days after. Last christmas, I had shockwave lithotripsy. I had no problems, pain, or soreness. I highly recommend the procedure and the drugs they give you. I have a personal preference for vicodin.:D

I hope they didn't use the same equipment.

The shockwave lithotripsy is definitely the way to go. You'll be a little sore after, but it generally breaks the stones into such small pieces you won't even notice them. Is vicodin the same as percocet? Cause the percocets rule!
