This is why self-driving cars will not take over our roads for decades. People aren't even buying the latest cars with auto-headlights that have been around over 1 decade.

The only time I have to touch my headlights is after annual state inspection when they flip it off auto.

My 2006 Subaru doesn't have them (but my '95 Grand Cherokee did). I wouldn't use them anyway--but I'm also not an idiot, and turn my lights on when it's dark out, or raining. It's a simple measure of self-preservation.

Really? My 2005 Forester has daytime running lights.

You wouldn't use them?? You'd actually go out of your way to disable them?

Years ago I was talking to a cop and he was saying that people try to dodge tickets by turning off their lights and running dark. He said that almost always, the person would eventually tuck into a driveway and sit there, with their foot on the brake. :)

It's also a problem when people turn their lights on too early, like soon after the sun disappears over the horizon. The glare from their headlights makes it harder to detect those without headlights. If they'd just turn off the headlights till it gets dim, I could see better.

DRL are not the same as auto lights.

I just never put the switch to "auto" in my Jeep.
And yeah, if it wasn't such a damn hassle in my Subaru, you bet your sweet ass I'd disable the DRL. These headlights are a royal PITA to change, and I wouldn't have to do it as often.

I used to make 'moonlight runs' between Spokane, WA and Springdale (or other rural points north), as did a lot of other people. You could go for miles without seeing a set of headlights, which made it easy for the cops to park in the dark and nail you if you were speeding at night. Solution? Turn off the headlights and put a switch on your brake lights. You would cruise along dark until you saw headlights in the distance ahead. When the headlights ahead disappear (curve, dip) you would drop speed and turn yours on so when the car ahead reappeared, it looked like you had just come into their view from behind. If a car was approaching from behind (and you were speeding along dark), you found some side road to pull over and let them by.

It was pretty cool cruising along through rolling farmland on a moonlit night, car dark and instruments dimmed.

Ya, I think a lot of people assume day-time runnings actually light anything up. And they don't usually turn on the rear passive lights either which is lots of fun during heavy rain/snow.

Company fleet cars I drove had auto lights. I didn't really like them and switched them to the on position always -- most annoying thing was passing under a bridge and having the dash go brighter then darker again.

Too funny :)

I had a 70 Camaro in high school that I installed a toggle switch on the dash would turn off everything but the headlights, was all grey primer and chrome tricks on it. Was a stealth Camaro at night on country roads, you'd be surprised how effective not seeing headlights a lot from the rear if you're trying to hide bombing down one.

Was fun for tearing around att.

First "when it's dark out" is far too late to turn your lights on.

I drove a Acura in the mid 80 that didn't have DRL, and people were always pulling out in front of me. I added a relay to create DRL and there was a noticeable difference in the number of people that would pull out in front of me.

Most of the time headlights are more to "be seen" than to actually "see" where you are going. My state has also passed a law to require the use of headlights if your wipers are on. Not that it effects idiots at all. Twilight, raining, and they drive a dark gray car and you can't fucking seen them, but since they can see you and they ain't smart enough to figure it out.

I am always surprised how often I see cars without their lights on when its dark. For crying out loud, I even have my lights on for my bike rides this time of the year.

I saw this last year, a guy had only a small orange light on. Like no head lights, no nothing. I saw something faintly lit in the distance then realized it was an oncoming vehicle half way in my lane. People need to change their bulbs as soon as they burn and not be lazy bastards. Though there is another thing that is even worse, and it's those stupid blue HID lights. That needs to be illegal. It's practically like being hit in the eye with a laser beam. Would not surprise if they can cause eye damage. I try to shield my eyes from them as much as I can. They seem to come out more and more every year. That's what I like about summer those lights don't seem to be out much. I don't know if people change their bulbs for winter or what.

People forget their children in their cars on 100 degree days, and yet we have some claiming they're amazed that anyone could forget to turn their headlights on at dusk.

was that small orange light in the middle of his vehicle?

Was on the side, I think it was one of those side lights that stay on along with the head lights, like some cars have, like around where the signal light would be. It was dark so I only noticed it was a car until my own lights lit it up enough. It was some kind of SUV.

Basically at least 3 bulbs were burnt and never replaced. Because the other orange light was off too. I presume the other side would have had one too.

And no driving with only the parking lights on.
Parking lights are meant for that.... parking.
Not for that timeframe between sundown and pitch black.

Yea, I see many that do this. I guess they don't pay attention when switching on the lights.

Just be sure not to flash anyone with their headlights out...it could be a gang initiation ritual, where they drive with their lights off and shoot anyone who flashes them.

At least that's what I read on a fax I received sometime in the last century. :p

If it is dark enough that the dash lights would bother you, your damn lights should be on anyway, or you could always just dim the damn things, if you are not too dim to do that.

It is not about "auto" mode or not, it is that newer car has dash board back light on at all time. driver won't know their light system is on or off especially newer car with xeon projector as daytime running light, it is the same to the drive. Unlike in older car if you can't see the dash it act as a reminder to turn on the headlight.
