Turn off resampling / letterboxing?

Hopefully a simple question:

Is it possible to turn off resampling on an LCD so that when you select a resolution lower than the native panel res, it letterboxes it in the middle instead?

I'm actually wanting to do this because I'm doing a case mod where the LCD panel I ended up with is just a teensy bit bigger than the viewable opening. I don't mind losing 20-30 pixels of display, but losing the menu bar is a problem.
 
If you want to do it from the display itself it's going to depend on what the display can do, so you would have to tell us about your display. Otherwise at least if you have an NVIDIA card then it would be easier to just do it through NVIDIA's control panel; set the card to do GPU scaling (rather than letting the display do it) and then their 3rd mode, "No scaling" is their letterboxing mode.

I had found the scaling options in the nVidia drivers on my desktop system.

I don't actually know what monitor it is - I ordered some POS parts: a bare LCD panel and a controller board kit. So I guess I'll tinker with it when it gets here to see what will work. I was just kinda hoping there was some kind of software resolution switcher I hadn't heard of.

What GPU is driving the system in question? I think AMD has something similar, but it's been a while since I've messed with an AMD card in that manner.

Fair warning, i've had nothing but troubles with the Intel graphics control panel when it comes to overscan/underscan and the like. You can usually get the desired results, but don't expect the sliders and switches to work how you'd expect them to with an Nvidia or AMD card. Really hope they sort this stuff out with their new push towards stronger integrated graphics/Iris.
