Turn off computer or keep it on?

This may be a simple question to some of ya, but I have not found a real valid answer as to why I should or should not keep my computer turned on whilst I am afk. I typically have at most about two-three hours at most to play with the machine. Thus, like most appliances, I tend to turn my computer off when it is not in use.

Basically, do whatever is more convenient. The computer is not harmed in either way (aside from dust collection from the movement of air). I leave my machine on, and run SETI if I'm not going to be on it for a while. But if I'm going to be away for a full day or more, I might shut it down just to save electricity.

I use my computers to heat my apt.

And btw, yes, turning it on / off DOES hurt it.

Believe it or not, its better for your HDs to stay on 24/7 rather than cold booting daily.

I'm pretty sure that keeping on your computer all the time will not hurt it. The computers here at school have been on 24/7 since September 1st, and they will probably remain on as long as possible, or until an administrator needs to do some work. Oh, and in case you're wondering, we have 100+ computers here, and not one of them has had problems that were due to keeping it on 24/7.

It does not hurt your comp...only the electricity bill ;)

My rig e.g. sucks up ~100 Watts in idle and with cool & quiet active (1000MHz, 1.0V).
As a sidenote cool and quiet does only account for like 5-10 Watts difference compared to full speed when idle anyway...

So it consumes 1kWh per 10 hours which are like...umm...17 cents? So ~40 cents a day plus load more-consumption @ 250 Watts :D

That's a crock! There is plenty of reason to turn such things off when you are going to be gone for extended periods of time - like on a trip.

Basically, it depends on usage. If you use it every day - leave it on if you are "present for duty." If usage is only occasionally - turn it off when not in use.

Do you leave your TV running when you are gone for the day? :)

I leave it on 24/7, even my laptop. Only time my laptop is shut off is when i need to carry it to work or back home, but then it's in suspend mode.

hibernate is even lamer then off (imho). Nothing should ever be turned off or hibernate, on on on (no - I don't work for the power company). As some other d00d said, maybe if you're going away on a 2 week holiday or something like that... but even then I leave all my stuff on.

The only time I shut mine down is when I am going to be away for awhile, and won't be there to shut it down if there is a thunderstorm or whatever.

Get a serious lightning hit and you will start turning them off.
And unplugging them
