asus p5b mobo- c2d 4500, running windows home server.System will not shut down fully. Video goes off, sounds like hard drives park , but cpu fan remains powered. System is un-responsive at this time but why doesn't it just shut off completly?I've been thru the bios and power options in windows but nothing .

Some power supplies, like Enermax, run the fan for a few minutes after you shutdown to cool the case, or until a certain temperature is reached. This could be why the fan is still running with the computer off?

all I see running is the cpu fan and front panel power led. Power supply is an Antec 500 watt.I'm not sure if the cpu itself shuts down as the system is unresponsive to all input as its supposed to be when off.I've seen things like this before when bios had enabled things like modem wake on ring and wake from pci but I think I've covered everything in bios, I must be overlooking something.

I've had the same problem in Vista. Are you running server 08? Because when i go to "start" then go to the power down button it says "Keeps your sessions in memory and puts the computer in a low-power state so that you can quickly resume working." Check if it says that for you. That could be the problem. When i first built this machine and tried to turn it off for the first time i was really confused. It's a minor annoyance but I just click the little arrow next to the "Lock computer" button in the "start" menu and then click "Shut Down" works like a charm.
Might be the problem, might not. Just sharing my similar experience.

This is Windows Home Server, based on svr 2002 sbs. The shutdown menu is the conventional windows. I dont think that its just going into standby or hibernate because the cpu fan is still going, tho the hard drives and video go off.Its like there's a c-mos switch on the mobo that isn't turning off the 12V or the ps isnt going into standby, keeping the 12v rails up.
